It may well be the most anticipated State of The Territory Address in Virgin Islands history. When Governor John P. deJongh, Jr., takes the podium Monday night, under the shadow of the Inspector General’s report on “Mafoliegate,” the eyes and ears of the Territory and beyond will be focused on him and every word will be heard and analyzed for days to come. We’d like to know what you want to know from the Governor tonight. What topics should he cover? What issues should he address, and what questions would you ask about how we as Virgin Islanders move forward from here? The floor is yours. Share on Facebook

Hill’s Motives Called “Political” by Pemberton and “Sweetheart” comments refuted by Sen. Richards Senate President Louis Patrick Hill says he rebid the Legislative broadcast contract to save money and address the “sweetheart” deal WDHP owner Hugh Pemberton had with previous Legislatures. Former Senate President and current Senator Usie Richards took issue with that statement, and said that he, and the previous Senate presidents who were involved in the contract since its inception had no part in any “sweetheart” deal. And owner Pemberton said the whole thing is “personal and political” because he refused to comply with Hill’s demand that he fire radio host Mario Moorehead and clamp down on callers who oppose the current Administration. “It had nothing to do with a sweetheart deal,” he said. “If I had do what I was told to do, I would have the Senate today.” Controversy continues to swirl around Hill’s decision to terminate the contract held since 2001 by WDHP to do live broadcasts of the Legislative sessions. In a statement on Monday, Hill said he became concerned about the cost of the contract when he became Senate president last spring and decided it should be rebid in an attempt to save money.
“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” – Lord Acton In the most stunning act of censorship this Government has perpetrated to date, Senate President Louis Patrick Hill has cancelled the Legislature’s contract with radio station WDHP because owner Hugh Pemberton refused to fire host Mario Moorehead and clamp down on callers who are critical of Governor John P. deJongh Jr. The contract, a two-year agreement that was not set to expire until January, 2011, was terminated effective January 1, 2010 and was put out to bid last November. It is not known what station has been awarded the new agreement. Pemberton spoke to the issue today on the Jimmie O’Bryan morning program. pemberton – let him take it away This is the latest in series of thinly veiled efforts by this Administration to control the information about government activities through the broadcast, print and internet media in the Virgin Islands. The past few months have seen an obvious campaign by those in support of the Administration to flood the airwaves with often illogical and inaccurate spins on the misdeeds in Government and the impact those actions are having on the present and future of the Virgin Islands.
The Legislature’s Henchmen turned up the heat and the documents that tell the “Mafoliegate” story have vanished from the official 28th Legislature’s website. Now we’re wondering if the hearings that Sen. Neville James was supposed to call to bring the rest of this scandal to light are going to disappear too. We knew the Henchmen, Senators Hill, Dowe and White, were furious with James for posting the documents. We knew they were pressuring him to take them down and we know they’re trying whatever they can to make sure that these hearings don’t take place. We’re not worried about the documents. We anticipated there might be a “problem” with the site and took action to preserve the information. So don’t fret. We’ve still got them and will be making them available in the near future. And don’t think we didn’t notice that the Public Finance Authority (PFA) documents never even got posted. Senator James, those hearings MUST take place. You know it, we know it, the Henchmen know it, and the Administration knows it. These strong-arm tactics have sent a clear message to the community – that this Administration and its accomplices will do anything to keep the truth out [...]

We knew it wouldn’t go any farther than his request but we understand why he did it. No one had any real hope for success when Senator Adlah “Foncie” Donastorg called for a waiver of the rules to repeal Act 6905 during last weeks’ Special Session at the Legislature. He knew the procedures, and the majority, were against him. But he did it anyway and his point was made. There will be another time, another place. Just remember. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
