What would candidate deJongh do to address our most pressing issue; the cost of living? Candidate deJongh On Cost of Living – Vol 1 To date, we have witnessed: -Press releases and press conferences on the formation of committees and task force groups -Press releases and press conferences on a land swap solution for the St. John school -Press releases and press conferences on the reduction of flights by American Airlines -Press releases criticizing the votes of St. Croix Senators -Press releases on meetings held with Hovensa and St. Croix Renaissance What about Resolution 1720 Governor? When are these press releases and press conferences going to become concrete solutions to address the crisis we are facing in this territory as it relates to the cost of living?
With crime continuing unabated, we decided to revisit Governor deJongh’s speech, dated the 21st of February 2007, when he named James McCall the new Commissioner of Police. The following excerpts from the Governor’s speech stand out as broken promises: “We all know the problem, we know it is real, and we know it is intolerable…44 unsolved murders over the past two years are not acceptable; a riot on a high school campus is not acceptable; the 125 burglaries on St. John last year, without a single arrest or conviction, are not acceptable. I believe that we have all come to the point, no, we have gone past the point, that enough is enough!” “We must choose order and opportunity over chaos and crime.” “I have made it clear to our police department, to the Attorney General and to the Federal agencies with whom we must work, and with whom I have met, that I expect action and I expect it now! I want to hear about more illegal weapons taken off of our streets, and less about known criminals not being prosecuted. I want to see and hear of positive changes.” “We will work on many things at once. We [...]

With crime continuing unabated, we decided to revisit the February 21, 2007 speech delivered by then Commissioner Nominee James McCall in accepting his nomination to the position. The following excerpts, from the nominee’s speech, stand in stark contrast to the results we have seen to date: “There are many tools that we can use to stem the tide of criminal activity in our community, but none are more effective than a successful relationship between the prosecutors and the police.” “The renewed working relationship between our two departments will allow our police officers to become more effective in establishing probable cause prior to an arrest which should increase the number of search and seizure warrants.” “Believe me when I say this cooperative effort between police and prosecutors works. I have seen it work very successfully in other jurisdictions and have much confidence that it will work here.” “There is but one goal: to get the criminals off the street. With the cooperation of the Attorney General’s office and assistance from the Federal and territorial law enforcement agencies we will begin to specifically and aggressively target armed violent offenders and potential violent gangs. There is a widespread belief that the police often [...]
