Well now we know what they think. The minority senators of the “Next Generation” fired back Tuesday to critics who have chastised them for their public response to the latest information related to the Mafoliegate scandal. And their message to the public was clear – we have done what we can about Mafolie – the rest is up to you. Sens. Neville James, Terrence “Positive” Nelson and Nellie O’Reilly made their comments during their weekly radio program. They were responding to calls from the public to reopen the Mafolie investigation after satellite photos emerged last week indicating that construction had begun at Gov. John deJongh’s Mafolie residence prior to the 2006 election – construction that was eventually paid for with public funds. And after a caller accused the trio of being “cowards” for not taking a public stand on the new information, Nelson responded that he felt the minority was being “targeted.” positive concerted effort He went on to say that the public needs to take responsibility for moving the issue forward, but that many wanted only to complain about a lack of leadership, rather than take any personal risk. positive want to be comfortable wootoop O’Reilly offered [...]

Now this is a guardhouse we should spend some money to repair. The historic Danish Guardhouse at Government House on St. Croix was seriously damaged over a month ago during Hurricane Earl’s torrential visit to the Virgin Islands and today it remains, dislodged from its base, and no apparent action has been taken to rescue this local monument. If there’s money to build a “guardhouse” at Governor John P. deJongh’s private home at Mafolie (and surround it with a new driveway and fence worth $490,000) then surely there is money to repair and restore a true representation of our colonial legacy. Oops, there we go again – thinking the priorities of our history outweigh the needs of “The One.” Share on Facebook

They said the water was running like river rapids through Nadir last week when torrential rainfall struck that flood-prone area in St. Thomas. They watched as streets turned into sheets of fast moving water, carrying mud and debris into cars, yards and homes. They watched the level of the water in the Nadir Gut rise, and eventually overflow, as clogged output pipes and a failing system were unable to manage the flow. They prayed that the rain would stop long enough or the levels to go down before the next wave – and they prayed that there wouldn’t be any kind of medical or other emergency, because there were periods when no aid could come in and no one could get out. And when the clouds finally parted, and they had a chance to assess the damage, we wonder if they thought about how much of the calamity could have been avoided if the $1.3 million in reprogrammed funds from the Nadir Flood Control project had been left in place. You remember those funds, don’t you? Those were the public funds that through the manipulations of Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr., his accomplices Sen. Carlton “Ital” Dowe, and certain other [...]

Well it’s not the best solution, but it’s a start. Remember the crash at the rear “Mafolie Gate”? Nobody knew who did it; there was reportedly no video record of the incident; and the contractor who discovered the damage was prohibited from filing a police report. For some time after the accident, the rear “gate”, part of a $490,000 “security enhancement” publicly funded project carried out at Gov. John deJongh’s private Estate Mafolie residence, was secured with a piece of string – a curiously low-tech solution to a breach in a “state-of-the-art” security system that included a video surveillance camera pointed directly at the point of impact. And considering all we’d heard about the need to protect the Governor, an irresponsible solution as well. A standard link chain is now the closure method on this portal to the rear of the Mafolie Estate. And while it’s better than the string, it’s hardly a competent solution to the access issue. Not only is it inconvenient – what’s the entry method? Get out of the car and open a padlock? And unless those video cameras, which reportedly didn’t record the first incident, are “working” again, anybody with some chain cutters could snap a [...]

Superior Court Judge Harold Willocks has recused himself from the “Mafoliegate” civil case and the matter will resume with a different judge in June or July. The highly anticipated court action was filed by Lawrence “Recon” Olive and demands that Virgin Islands Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr., return to the VI Treasury $490,000 in public funds that was used to make improvements to his private home at Estate Mafolie on St. Thomas. The funds had been authorized for road repairs in Act 6917. A United States Inspector General Report has concluded that deJongh illegally used the funds; however deJongh has stated he will not return the funds without an order from the court. Atty.
“Mafoliegate” goes to court on Monday, May 17, and vocal community activist Lawrence “Recon” Olive will present his case against Virgin Islands Governor John P. deJongh, Jr in the public funds scandal about the use of $490,000 on his private Estate Mafolie residence. Olive, who has been a relentless watchdog of the deJongh administration, announced the details of the hearing recently on the Mario Moorhead radio program. recon court case set The scope of the scandal has expanded greatly since Olive and his attorney Jeffrey B.C. Moorhead filed the action last September. Since that time, the VI Legislature has held three hearings on the matter; the United States Inspector General has issued a report confirming that the use of the funds was illegal; and deJongh has responded publicly twice – once before the IG report, stating that he would repay a portion of the disputed funds and again after the IG report was issued, changing his position and stating that he would only pay back the funds on the order of the court. The Legislative hearings were held by the Committee on Financial Services, Infrastructure and Consumer Affairs, chaired by Sen.
It ain’t over – yet. The Legislature’s investigation into the Mafoliegate matter is “conditionally” closed and the Committee investigating the scandal will submit its findings to the US Attorney General by May 4. But Committee Chairman, Sen. Neville James, said the issue will not be closed until the Legislature hears from the “poisonous tree” in this matter – the Virgin Islands Public Finance Authority. mafoliegate III poisinous tree In a session that started nearly two hours late, the Committee on Financial Services, Infrastructure and Consumer Affairs compiled a listing of more than 20 findings that summarize their conclusions in the matter that has occupied the minds of politically aware Virgin Islanders since last June – the expenditure of some $490,000 in unauthorized public funds that Governor John P. deJongh, Jr., spent on enhancements to his private Mafolie home on St. Thomas. Throughout the three hour session, the Committee members were blunt in their criticism of the Governor and his operatives who were complicit in what was finally called a “conspiracy” in the use of the funds in question. And the Governor’s flip-flop on his intention to pay back a portion of the funds, which he retracted following the issuance of [...]

Will Sen. Neville James bring down the final curtain on the Legislature’s investigation of Mafoliegate tonight? Will there be more testimony? Will anyone from the Public Finance Authority humble themselves to tell the Committee on Financial Services, Infrastructure and Consumer Affairs (and the public by the way) how they participated in the spending of $490,000 in unauthorized public funds on Governor John P. deJongh, Jr.’s Estate Mafolie home? Will we finally hear an articulation of the Committee findings and the specifics of what they plan to forward to the US Attorney General on the affair? For those who somehow may not know, the scandal revolves around the use of some $490,000 in public funds to install security enhancements at Virgin Islands Governor John P. deJongh, Jr.’s, private residence at 23-8 Estate Mafolie on St. Thomas. The funds were diverted from road repair projects authorized in Act 6917. Two previous hearings have resulted in a few revelations and lots of defiant behavior by members of the Administration. The United States Inspector General issued a report in January concluding that the use of the funds by the Governor was unauthorized, and recommended that he repay them in full. The Governor responded by questioning the competency and integrity [...]
