Some Virgin Islands prisoners are being forced to choose between their religion and solitary confinement in a Virginia prison. According to the attached column from RaceWire.org, this week marks the sixth year that six Rastafarian prisoners from the Virgin Islands will spend in solitary confinement for refusing to cut their dreadlocks. Per their religion, men must remain unshorn. But their refusal puts them in violation of the prison’s “grooming policy” so they have been placed in isolation. According to Kim Lyons, many VI prisoners in stateside prisons face the same dilemma – defy their jailers or betray their beliefs. Lyons is the leader of the VI Prison Project, an organization dedicated to returning Virgin Islands prisoners incarcerated on the mainland to the VI. For more information, visit the project website at http://viprisonproject.wordpress.com/ RaceWire Article on VI Prisoners Share on Facebook

After listening to the ongoing on-air debate about the legitimacy of the Roger W. Morgan Foundation we did a little research to try to put the question to rest. Morgan is a local radio personality who promoted The Roger W. Morgan Foundation on-air as a 501(c)3 while soliciting funds for Kissee Richards medical expenses. 501(c) is a provision of the United States Internal Revenue Code (26 U.S.C. § 501(c)), that grants federal tax exempt status to certain types of non-profit organizations. Ms. Richards’ medical expenses were ultimately absorbed by a stateside hospital that took on her case. Records at the Lt. Governor’s Office dated April, 2006, show that eligibility for the 501 status was denied until more information was provided. We were unable to locate any more recent documentation showing that the deficiencies were corrected and that the appropriate registration and accompanying tax exempt eligibility were obtained. It has been reported that some $25,000 was collected in donations to the “Foundation.” Was the Foundation was duly registered under the law as a bona fide non-profit organization before funds were collected? If there is a verifiable document validating the legal status of this ”Foundation”, CIF will publish it to put this issue to rest. [...]

It seems that local radio personality Roger Morgan ran into a problem paying back the interest on a $25,000 promissory note and had to be sued by the individuals who loaned him the money. The complaint was filed by Andreas Tietje and named Morgan and his wife Kanga as defendants. They were to appear in Superior Court to answer the complaint on October 20. The loan, according to the complaint attached below “was furnished to the Defendant(s) as a down payment for WODI radio station in Brookneal, Virginia.” We hope Mr. Tietje got the rest of his money back. But what we really want to know is – did you buy that radio station? Small Claims Complaint – Morgan Notice of Oct. 20 Hearing Share on Facebook
