Righteous indignation is a beautiful thing. Calling union leaders who supported members who staged a job action on Tuesday by not going to work “shockingly oblivious to the financial challenges” faced by the Territory, Gov. Re-Elect John P. deJongh Jr. huffed and puffed and tried to create the first smoke screen of his final term. The work slowdown was triggered by an announcement last week by Chief Labor Negotiator Valdemar Hill to government union representatives Tuesday at a meeting convened by the V.I. Office of Collective Bargaining. At that time, union leaders, particularly St. Croix union leaders James Howell, of the American Federation of Teachers, and Ira Hobson, of the St. Croix Steelworkers union, learned that negotiated salary increases would not be paid. Now we’re not going to wave a banner for any of the major union leaders in the Virgin Islands. We’ve often questioned who they’re working for and where they’ve been for years while their dues paying members were shafted repeatedly. But that doesn’t mean deJongh gets to overlook one central principle of the collective bargaining arena – contracts, and their subsequent commitment to wages, hours and working conditions, are to be bargained in good faith. And that [...]

We are entering the darkest era in since slavery in the United States Virgin Islands. Beginning on Monday, and continuing for three torturous days, the Governor Re-Elect John P. deJongh, Jr. will take his inaugural road show to all three islands, starting on St. Thomas. We won’t be covering it. There will be no photographs, no audio clips, and no replicated quotations. Why should we? We don’t need to listen know what will be said. We don’t need to expose ourselves to more empty promises, more lies, more deceptions, more delusions. We have no desire to see the wooden smiles on the faces of those who will attend and the fatuous nods of approbation as he puts on the medallion and raises his hand to an unknown deity to pledge allegiance to God and these Virgin Islands. And this from a man who has made defiance of the law a trademark of his reign. And we certainly don’t need to hear his plans for the next four years, because we know what the past four years have brought us. Unprecedented levels of crime and violence; a level of debt that will refuse to be managed as revenues continue to decline; a shrinking [...]

This is a reminder to all you exempt government employees that your Governor Re-Elect John P. deJongh, Jr., wants your resignation letter today – but don’t put a date on it. That’s right. And in case you weren’t clear, that message you got yesterday means that you are to write that you are resigning your position – but don’t include an effective date – and get it to the Good Governor before you leave work today. And then just wait to see whether you are one of the few who is chosen to retain your position or whether you are going to join the rolls of the unemployed who inhabit your community. The irony is painful – but we aren’t the least bit surprised – and no one else should be either. You cannot – we repeat – cannot operate a government or any other business by borrowing to meet payroll and other operating expenses. We’ve been saying it for months. Revenues in the Territory remain flat and any money that does come in is consumed by debt service on the borrowing that has already occurred, including that tasty chunk of bonds and the cover over that’s been committed to [...]

Editorial by a Concerned Citizen Good Day: I am writing to share some insights that could have a significant impact on this year’s Gubernatorial election. I am actually amazed that none of the candidates (or the press, but frankly, I have little faith in the local media) have seen fit to raise this issue or ask about it, but so far they haven’t. I guess I’m the only one who noticed, so here goes… It has been a week and a day since Hurricane Earl passed the territory offering us what was thankfully only a glancing blow. Much has been said about how fortunate we were as a territory. Much has been said about what our Government agencies (most notably WAPA) did right and did wrong. Missed in all the discussion, however is probably the most significant issue of all. It is my strong opinion that during the emergency of Hurricane Earl, the leader of the Virgin Islands, Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. was ABSENT from the territory. I will elaborate on this claim below, but allow me to note at the outset that I am not claiming this to be a fact or certainty (note the words “strong opinion” in the [...]

(Update: It has just been announced that the debate will be webcast this evening on www.wtjx.org from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. and on radio station WDHP AM 1620) Maybe he thinks he’s got it in the bag. Maybe he thinks his chances of reelection are so solid that there’s no need for him to debate his challengers in an open, public forum. Maybe he’s only comfortable in the tightly controlled, anything but spontaneous environment that his Democratic Party leadership will provide in their debate next week. Maybe he’s just chicken. Whatever he is, Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr., will be a no-show at the 2010 Primary Gubernatorial Ticket Debates Thursday at the St. Croix Educational Complex The event will be held from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. The debate is sponsored by radio host Jamila Russell in conjunction with the Reclaim Our Islands, Unite Our People Community Organization and the Our Town Frederiksted and Frederiksted Economic Development Association (FEDA). A similar forum for candidates for Lt. Governor will be held Tuesday, August 31. According to reports, Russel received a letter from a deJongh “campaign worker” as she departed radio station 1620AM studios Wednesday afternoon, informing her that the Governor would not be participating as he will be [...]

Was she there to defend the budget proposal or the Governor? In a singsong presentation on the proposed FY2011 budget for the Office of the Governor, presenter Nellie C. Varlack was in turn petulant, proprietary and protective of her boss, Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. And the tone and content of her presentation caused one senator to invoke the image of the “Men In Black” to describe the actions of this Administration. Varlack, whose title is Director of Business and Administration, appeared Thursday in front of the Committee for Appropriations and Budget. The topic was supposed to be the $10.3 million budget request to operate the Office of the Governor, the Bureau of Economic Research and the Energy Office. But it quickly became apparent that this was as much about the Governor as it was about the budget. And some of her comments caused us, and some of the Senators who questioned her, to alternately smirk and ultimately wonder whether this was a comedy routine or a campaign infomercial. After four years of increasingly obvious fiscal mismanagement, Varlack told the committee what the Governor is requesting for his new budget. 11 budget varlack lump sum budget One of the items [...]

The displeasure of the Virgin Islands judiciary with Governor John P. deJongh, Jr., is now a topic on the international airwaves as illustrated by this clip today from the British Broadcasting Corporation. judiciary response to dejongh A press release issued by the VI Superior Court Monday strongly chastised the Governor for comments he made following the shooting incident at Canegata Ball Park last Friday. The Governor implied that the judiciary contributed to the incident as the 17-year-old minor arrested for the shooting was on “house arrest” for an incident on St. Thomas last year. According to the release, “While such levels of violence in any community is troubling, it is also disturbing that the Executive Branch has attempted, without accurate facts, to lay blame for the incident upon the Judiciary.” The release, attached below states that the law prohibits the Governor or any other Government official from publicing the specifics of this case or any juvenile matter; that the suggestion that the minor was on “house arrest” was inaccurate; and that to suggest that the courts should detain defendants pending trial and that pre-trial release programs should end is contrary to Virgin Island Law. According to the release, the current [...]

Senator Adlah “Foncie” Donastorg said Thursday that he was extremely grateful for the incredible outpouring of support he had received from the community in recent weeks. “I am humbled and appreciative of all your kind words, cards, letters and messages,” Donastorg said. “Please do understand that I have much I would like to say at this time, but my attorneys have advised me to refrain until this unfortunate matter is brought to a close. However, I will say for anyone that hasn’t heard that I am innocent and that these charges are entirely false.” Donastorg, who is now serving his 7th term as a Virgin Islands Senator, said that he had long understood that personal sacrifice was an inescapable component of leadership. “Rest assured that I am continuing my work on behalf of the people of our beloved Territory,” Donastorg said. “I am more convinced than ever that together we must now make the choice for change and move these islands in a more positive and progressive direction. We may have reached an all time low in Virgin Islands politics.” Attorney Gordon Rhea reaffirmed Donastorg’s innocence following Thursday’s arraignment in which the Senator once again indicated that he was not [...]

We don’t know whose behavior is more disgraceful – those in the system who executed this debacle against Sen. Adlah “Foncie” Donastorg or the way The Virgin Islands Daily News and The Source (STT and STX) have reported it. As events have unfolded since Donastorg turned himself in to police last Thursday on domestic violence charges, we have watched in disgust as mounting evidence has thrown the light of suspicion on those who pushed this into the courts, and have shaken our heads at the astoundingly biased (even for them) way the two major “mainstream” print media outlets have handled the information. The charges stemmed from a police report filed by a 19-year-old St. Thomas woman recounting an incident that allegedly occurred between her and the Senator in January. In that initial report, she reportedly said that Donastorg had threatened her with a gun when she went to his home and that he assaulted her while trying to get her out of his car when he gave her a ride back to her mother’s home that same evening. Donastorg is scheduled to be formally charged and enter a plea on March 11. Significant portions of her story have changed. But the [...]
