Open Forum: What Should The Senate Do On Tuesday?

January 21, 2012

At your request, we’re launching this Open Forum for suggestions to our Government (which is clearly having trouble coming to agreement on how to get out of this latest mess), about what needs to happen when they come back from “recess” on Tuesday.

In a move that left all of us shaking our heads in disbelief, Sen. President Ronald Russell went through the motions of two anthems, prayer and the introduction of two Senate “pages” on Friday before announcing that In light of the Hovensa closure, the much-anticipated session, originally called to deal with some of those other pesky financial issues we are facing, would stand in recess until Tuesday.

The Senate also requested, and the Governor complied, that the annual State of the Territory Address, originally scheduled for Monday, January 23, be postponed. It has been rescheduled for Monday, January 30 as has Operation Yellow Cedar, a planned demonstration of public dissatisfaction to precede the speech.

So, clearly, they need our help.

Focus on solutions. Pick your problem – God knows there are enough of them. And please stay on topic. All the usual rules apply and comments that clearly have no relevance to the topic will be removed.

How would you begin to solve these problems?

I agree. A lot of them have had shady pasts and some implicated in corruption. It is troubling to me that our fate is being vetted behind closed doors. Imagine if the US Congress operated that way. It would never happen.
WAPA needs to be privatized along with WMA. We have more clueless at the helm with no answers. Full working audits need to be completed in both agencies. Eliminate the boards of both of them with the privatization.
More government do nothings need to be relieved of their duties NOW. Get rid of ALL perks NOW.

The closed door meeting are over the top. We need to be involved and offer input in what is being discussed before they take any votes tomorrow. The very thought that they are arrogant enough to think they have all the answers and will decide our fate void of public and media purview is appalling, especially after the revelation of the legislature audit mismanaging $6.9 million and no one yet has been indicted or named by our ‘transparent’ Ronnie.

Sure do. And we would have been better off and not in the pickle we are in today.

The government is a lousy manager of WAPA and WMA and hotels, property you name it…….anything the private sector can do better since they have the expertise and resources. Hugo’s folly of a connection to PR is stupid. The very thought that PR is paying more than we are and we are going to BUY electricity from them? May and her Alpine fiasco…..you know all the issues there.

    Seriously on January,

Thx for the link. The following paragraph caught my attention. My, my how VI politicos sing the same tune over and again!!! If I am correct this was back in 1999.

“Turnbull has said that unless the government comes up with a funding source, it will face a $39 million shortfall for payroll in December. If payroll can’t be met, he said, as many as 2,500 government workers will be laid off.”

Good morning. Anyone know why 1620 isn’t on the internet this morning?

    Thank you.

If we are a territory under U.S. laws and codes, why do we have to pay customs duty on foreign products when the same duty has already been levied when the product entered the U.S. Mainland. This is a huge cost to citizens here that should be addressed as our (so called) V.I. gov’t retools.
Put that on the list of cost cutting measures.

The legislaure and the governor doesn’t have a clue to what is going on and what to do. If all they can do is borrow money and raise taxes, shows how blind they are to the realities of the present. There are so many areas in government that needs to be eliminated. One would think that they would have the balls to make the tough calls but they don’t.
    It’s politics as usual.

    Governor and his cabinet,total failure.
Russell and his legislature, total failure

    I NEED 1620

@dooreo, I also have a concern that customs refuses to honor any bill of sale or anything certifying the value of a car brought into the territory. They never go to the lot and view the cars, they just look at the blue book and choose a value. My only concern is, without viewing a ear,how do they determine if the car is in good, fair or excellent condition in order to select a value? Supposed the car is a 2010 lexus, but it is damaged or has transmission problems, that affects the value; yet they make you pay full value.
