Aside from their roles as arbiters of the truth through their websites, officials of CruciansInFocus.com and Demmansay.com exhibited their culinary talents at the “Belief In The Reef” event Saturday on St. Croix.
CIF President Michael J. Springer Jr. was the grillmaster for the winning barbeque ribs and DMS’s Edwin Callwood took honors for best grilled shellfish.
Hundreds attended the daylong event designed to raise funds for radio station WDHP – AM 1620. After several months of financial difficulty due primarily to lack of advertising revenue, the station mounted a public campaign to raise funds. Saturday’s event at the stations Castle Coakley location was the first in a series of fundraising events.
The day featured a 50-year-dash event, won by frequent radio caller Raphael “Raphie” Corniero; a Quelbe dancing demonstration; a dance contest; and the introduction to the crowd of frequent radio callers.
Springer said he was pleased at the victory, but even more pleased at the turnout for the event.
“Everybody had a good time, and it was a very successful event for the station,” he said. “But it was only the first step – now we need to turn our attention to the government shutdown on November 9.”
Dwane Callwood, who also spoke to the attendees, echoed these sentiments saying “and now we have to keep this going – join me on the steps of the Legislature in St. Thomas on November 9 when we shut this government down.”
More on the November 9 event as details develop.
