$66k In Unpaid Taxes And Indifference Toward Mafoliegate – Senator Russell Has Some Explaining To Do

July 31, 2011

Did renovations start at deJongh's Mafolie home before the 2006 election?

Senate President Ronald Russell tells us he is serious about finding ways to resolve the “financial crisis” facing the Virgin Islands and that the government should “lead by example.”

So we’ve got a suggestion that will aid him in both his assertions – he can pay the $66,684.51 he owes to the government in back taxes. That way, he can help bolster the failing economy and set an example for others to follow.

That includes his chief executive officer Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. who has admitted spending nearly a half million dollars in public money to fix up his private Mafolie home. But despite the emergence of what could be compelling photographic evidence this week – evidence indicating that those Mafolie renovations happened before the 2006 election – Russell says not to bother him, or the Legislature, with what he calls an illogical politically motivated attempt to squander the Legislature’s resources.

Pity. Between the two of them, the treasury could get at least a $566.000 contribution right off the bat.

Russell’s Taxes

Sen. President Ronald Russell

Attached below is a lien filed on December 8, 2010 against Ronald and Roylette Russell showing an unpaid tax balance of $66,684.51 for income taxes from 2006 in the amount of $14, 517.68 and from a 4549A charge in the amount of $52,166.83 from tax year 2005. 4549A charges generally stem from audits conducted by the Internal Revenue Service.

The charges were assessed in January of 2009 and May of 2010. If a release of the lien has been issued, it was not visible. If the Senator has verifiable proof these taxes have been paid, we’ll print it.

The Satellite Images

Satellite photographs were revealed last week showing construction at then private citizen deJongh’s Mafolie residence in November of 2006, preceding the election that gave him his first term.

The photographs show construction in the areas that were later revealed to be the guardhouse and parking lot later discovered to be paid for with public funds. The images were downloaded from Google Earth and do not appear to have been altered in any way.

The major issues stemming from this revelation are two-fold:

  1. The rationale for the expenditure of public funds on the Mafolie property was that the renovations were essential for the safety of the Governor. deJongh was not governor at the time the photographs were taken.
  2. Does the evidence of construction prior to the election indicate preemptive knowledge of the election results?

At minimum, one would expect that the Legislature, having held three hearings during the Twenty-Eighth Legislature and reporting findings to the US Attorney General, would have at minimum some curiosity as to the impact of these findings and at maximum, would reconvene a session to investigate this new information. Don’t you even wonder if the photos are legitimate?

Not Senator Russell.

No matter the implications of these images to the complicity of all three branches of the government and the board of elections in the proven corruption that is Mafoliegate, Russell doesn’t even believe that the credibility of the images should be investigated.

Listen to that carefully. It’s “farfetched” he says and asks “what’s the logic of taking a picture and saying it’s before….”

He can’t even say the word. So we’ll ask and answer the question for him.

It’s before the ELECTION! And the logic is that if in fact this is Mafolie, and if the construction started before the election, then what does that tell you about when the governor knew about what the outcome would be?

Don’t you think it even bears looking into? Apparently not.

Not only that, he says, but he saw the picture on Facebook – therefore eliminating any credibility at all. Ever heard of social media? Ever heard of Egypt?

As far as he’s concerned, CrimeStoppers can handle it.

So if you thought for one minute there would be any support for looking into what these photos mean and what action should be taken to address them, forget about it – because it’s just not important.

So that’s his answer – let’s move on.

Sen. Russell may rest assured that the information has been passed on to those very agencies he refers to – except CrimeStoppers – and that his attitude and demeanor about this very important is duly noted and will be recalled at the appropriate time.

Meanwhile the disregard for the law, or even the appearance of respecting the law, marches on.

In the meantime, the Senate President should pay his taxes.

  8. Anonymous on August 14, 2011 at 12:34 am

It’s now obvious who Bolt is in the tank for. He practically had a heart attack defending the wrongdoings of de Jongh…….that’s a pathetic job if I ever saw one.

Bolt should be ashamed of himself.

Let’s talk about Ronnie some more…

I did not hear it myself, but I heard that Ronnie admitted on his show yesterday that he did in fact use his position ad president to steal Positive’s bill to reclaim a portion of gasoline excise taxes. Can anyone elaborate?

And…if gas stations collect .18 cents per gallon in taxes, and we collect .07 cents, WHY are our rates still higher than stateside?

Here is one of the comments that Tom Bolt posted to Clarence Payne Facebook page to response to comments made about Governor deJongh, Jr. corruption and lawlessness:

TOM BOLT: What are the facts…I have not seen a fact yet. I deal with facts and no one has shown me facts. Yell, scream, say what you will, but I believe that John P. deJongh has done an excellent job as Governr of the Virgin Islands. He is out there working day in and day out trying to solve the many problems that confront our Territory. Clarence what are you doing to make the Territory better? I see you going to Democratic Party meetings…but what are the results? There is much work to do in this Territory…come put your shouder to the wheel with Governor deJongh and so many others. Stop tearing the Virgin Islands down for what you believe to be wrong with it…join us in lifting high what is right in the Territory and be part of the solution – not part of the problem.

Here is Phillip Maxx response in defense of Clarance Payne and the people of the VI:

PHILLIP MAXX: Attorney Bolt, you are talking from both sides of your mouth. First you say that we depend on facts and when facts are presented you don’t see them. If you want to talk about tearing the Virgin Islands down take that up with John deJongh, Jr. It is he who is tearing down the Virgin Islands by way of his lawless behavior. How can you to Payne’s page and attack him with nonsense and praise the governor even though it is a fact that he misused the people of the Virgin Islands hard earn tax dollars. Attorney Bolt, join us in lifting high what is right in the Territory and be part of the solution – not part of the problem.

Here is another comment by C. Emmanuel.

Cletus Emmanuel: Much said by all…to Mr. Bolt, I must say, even the devil have friends huh. You talk abot facts? You are not dumb. Go get the DOI IG report for yourself. @ Clarence, though the battle is tough and it seems like an uphill battle, keep up the fight because the race is not for the swift. @ everyone else who difers with attorney Bolt, remember the serenity prayer; to accept the tings you cannot change..thanks Clarence…

Tom Bolt you have been exposed and the people of the Virgin Islands now have you in their sight!

CIF, I agree with the other blogger that you need to follow up on this story because Tom Bolt is acting like a Plantation Slave Master who taught he was talking to his slaves. He better check himself and understand what time it is. The days of feeding the massive BS to get us to close our eyes are over. Our eyes are wide open and WE ARE GOING TO CHASE THOSE CRAZY BALD HEADS OUT OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS.

It’s coming so get ready for the call!

Malik Sekou could not have said it any better on his Facebook page:

MALIK SEKOU: “We done know” just look at the VI today. No one who has money is complaining, only the sufferers are feeling the pain.

Malik’s words really sums it up about Tom Bolt’s outlook of the Virgin Islands. The rest of us that are feeling the pain and suffering should stop “belly aching” according to Tom Bolt. The nerve of this man to say such cruel words about people that are suffering throughout the Virgin Islands is unforgiving.

The time cometh near for all to respond to the call.

This sort of plantation behavior will be brought to an end in the Virgin Islands.

    Get ready for the call.

  15. Anonymous on August 14, 2011 at 9:18 am

Attorney Bolt should speak out about selective prosecution, as a lawyer he can’t deny this occured in the past 4 years.

  16. Exposed! on August 14, 2011 at 9:24 am

Heed Malik Sekou words as he compares the UK riots to the current state of affair in the Virgin Islands:

MALIK SEKOU: We, in the VI, should pay close attention to this. Social unrest occurs when the masses are enraged. It only takes a simple act of brutality or a spark and then there is an uprising.

Here is what was followed by another friend of Dr. Sekou on his Facebook page:

SHARON GEORGE: This is why we keep striving for social justice, for our time and beyond.

The time cometh near to respond to the call.

    Get ready for the call.
