Why Does Del. Donna Christensen Want To Raise Our Cost Of Living?
(The following commentary is a paid editorial by Vince Danet, Republican Candidate for US Delegate to Congress)
No matter what your politics are, it’s clear that we are very dependent on oil in our economy. By voting for a moratorium on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico (directly against 2 court orders), our Virgin Islands Representative (Donna Christensen) has chosen to directly impact Gulf Coast residents and indirectly impact Virgin Islanders.
80% of WAPA’s budget is to pay the fuel bill. The LEAC in our electric bills directly impacts all VI residents as the price of oil rises. We already pay the highest price per kilowatt hour in the country. Fuel prices at the pump are creeping up towards the $4 level in St Thomas… St John residents pay more.
Banning drilling doesn’t hurt British Petroleum or any other oil company; they simply move the rigs elsewhere and Gulf Coast residents lose the work.
Ask yourself this as you pay higher prices for gas at the pump, along with higher WAPA bills: Can your personal budget survive a 6-month gap in gainful employment? This act by our VI Delegate is negatively impacting families here in the US Virgin Islands. Can we really afford this type of representation?
I’ve attached the tally sheet from the committee vote on this issue. Below is an excerpt from an article in Human Events:
“In a stunning turn of events late last week, a five-vote bloc of U.S. “non-voting” territorial delegates were the deciding votes blocking an amendment to kill the Obama administration’s moratorium on offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) offered an amendment in the House Natural Resources Committee markup of the CLEAR Act that would have banned the moratorium that has already been thrown out twice by a U.S. federal court. The Obama administration has ignored the court orders issuing an additional ban.
The moratorium is currently wreaking havoc on the Gulf Coast economy.
The CLEAR Act is another of the myriad energy bills Democrats seek to ram through Congress as a result of the oil spill aftermath that have little to do with the spill and everything to do with their faux green energy power grab.
Cassidy’s amendment was killed by the “non-voting” members of the U.S. territories who have been granted the right to vote by the majority in any committee on which they serve.
These delegates represent territories of the United States whose constituencies are not U.S. citizens: Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands. Natives of these territories pay no U.S. federal income taxes.
In 2007, Democrats granted these delegates the ability to vote on amendments on the floor of the House with the concession that the vote will be done over if their votes are the deciding factor.”

I think we have a while yet to continue evaluating candidates lets check their record and hear their position on the issues.
Hear the answers to the issues then vote for Danet OR Moorehead.
Looks like the electorate doesn’t want a career politician in Congress anymore. The longer they are there the more ineffective they become. Basically they are just running a taxpayer and big donor paid campaign for another two year term. People are wising up to the old truism that…”Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
Vote for Moorehead. The other 2 can’t be trusted.
Remember Republicans are favored to control Congress. This is a real plus for the people of the Virgin Islands to send Vince Danet who *can indeed* be trusted to do his best for all of us regardless of our local party or no party affiliations.
As a woman I am ashamed by Donna and her corrupt ways. She COULD NEVER and WILL NEVER get my vote. The crony will be BOOTED!! Jeffrey Moorhead gets MY vote! Next!!!!!
Herb you are Anonymous 7:06 and for your info, we are voting for Jeffrey Moorehead!
@Annon 7:47 No not me…but I am here with this. Whomever they were they made good sense. Just hope that if Jeff gets the nod he will consider caucusing with the Republicans if they win the house. He does have that option as an Independent. If the general election requires a runoff and Vince doesn’t make the cut, but I hope he will, then Jeff will have much of our support. This particular election is all about much “change.” Personally I know Jeff and like him very much. So the best strategy IMHO is to Jeff or Vince and let the best man win. At least we agree on one thing that Donna must be driven from her political temple. We also join in the point that this strategy can work and the Virgin Islands will move onward and upward politically.
Hey Herb you are starting to make good sense. Keep it up! If Donna looses, as Fungie used to say, “Everybody win”!
Wow! Now even Herb is speaking about CHANGE! Good job Herb, you are in the process of redeeming yourself.
Donastorg/Baptiste 2010 ‘Your Candidates for Change’
I agree, Donna and de Jongh have to go! Kick them out of our Government!
So it is perfectly clear the VI Republicans have not taken a position on the race for governor. We will caucus after the primary and decide if we will take a position. If so we will on the matter as a Territorial Committee/ Our NCW Semator Lilliana Belardo de Oneal is already actively supporting Mapp/Sekou. Others are fond of Sam Baptiste our former GOP Executive Director and Chairman of the 2000 GOP Convention for our party. Still others are solidly behind governor deJongh esecially because of his pro development and pro-business initiatives. All of those mention have undeniable shared values with the Republican Party. so after the primary we will vote on this as the Territorial Committee and support the candidate who supports the concept of less taxes, less spending, smaller government and one who will be more concerned about empowering people rather than bureaucracies. We support the concept of a more user freindly delivery of government service through public-private partnerships which will bring growth to our local economy.
So before you dis the local VI Republicans, remember we will be there after the primary and could very well determine the outcome of this hotly contested race. We will base our decisions on values rather than on mele and emotions.
Hey herb, who do you foresee winning the democratic primary?
whatever, herb, there aren’t enough of you ‘local republicans’ to determine a dog race. You give yourself and your party waaay too much credit.
everyone knows you are de jongh’s boy. You have sung for your supper too many times on this blog. So save you primary analysis, we all know you will say John is the frontrunner although Donastorg is kicking his a$$!
Anon@ 8:44 Like Bret maverick used to say, “My granddaddy told me never to ever bet on a sure thing.” Remember the incumbency under normal circumstances has an advantage. Apart from a lot of grumbling and electioneering there needs to be significant and almost universal disapproval among the party majority to remove their titular party head in a primary. Since it is now a four way race the disapproval is slip among three and in my view that may seal their fate as an effective opposition. I think the question remains if the disunity will prevail *after* the primary. But in VI politics almost anything is possible and that is why I was thinking that Governor deJongh was run as an Independent thus insuring a three way race in the general election. Here no one ever knows what treachery lays in waiting just like Caesar on the way to the Roman Senate ignored the warnings of the soothsayer to “beware the ids of March” only to be murdered on the steps to the senate by his most faithful supporters. Even his most ardent supporters Brutus and Cassius took part in the secret plot. Yet right now so many democrats are in some sort of a circular firing squad and most unlikely will be able to perfect some devious plan. Additionally the opposition to the incumbent will certainly need something more significant then mele and vicious rumors to convince voters. They will need to convince voters, almost to a moral certainty, that the removal of the incumbent will improve the quality of lives for all. Absent of that proof loud rhetoric alone will just not be convincing enough for people to take a chance to replace a known entity with one that is unknown for the most part.
Hetb you are so in the tank for !ohn de Jongh it’s not even funny. What is sad abput the sad state of affairs of the de Jongh Administration are based on facts and facts alone. You are too involved with the de Jongh administration to admit that de Jongh will lose the primary election. There is no melee or gossip being spread about !ohn de Jongh and his lack of positive leadership in the Territory.
It is a fact that Jonh de Jongh spent almost a half a million dollars of public funds to renovate his private home. It is fact that under the de Jongh Administration the murder rate and overall crime is the highest it has ever been in the Territory; 10 times higher than the US National Average. It is fact that our schools are in deplorable conditions, 60% of all VI children live below the National Poverty Rate, the student drop out is the highest it has ever been, all of this has occurred under the John de Jongh Administration.
It is a fact that John de Jongh purposely withhold sending out property tax bills and is now demanding that residences pay for 3 years worth of property taxes all at once or be forced to lose their home. It is fact that the de Jongh Administration has set up and charged Senator Donastorg with falso charges all in hopes of preventing him from challenging de Jongh in the Primary election. Not only that but it is the de Jongh Administration which prevented Senator Positive Nelson from obtaining a running mate. It is a fact that the LEAC is at an all time high causing individuals to go without electricity because they cannot afford to pay their WAPA bill. It is a fact that a lot of private business owners had to let go of employees because they too cannot afford their WAPA bill.
It is a fact that the de Jongh Administration manipulates government funds such as the VI Lottery Fund and PFA to award non bidding contracts to their friends and campaign supporters. It is a fact that the de Jongh campaign was financed by Jeffrey Epstein a convicted child molester whom the first Lady Cecile de Jongh works for.
IT IS A FACT, THAT NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE USVI HAVE THINGS BEEN SO HORRIBLE EXCEPT FOR UNDER THE DE JONGH ADMINISTRATION.
THERE IS YOUR SO CALLED GOSSIP AND MELEE FOR YOU HERB, NOW YOU CAN GO AND SPREAD THE FACTS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.
Herb, we will make history on (9-11-2010) by unseating a sitting governor in the Primary.
Am I allowed to compare any past administration’s with the present? Why do the champions of the vast culture of administrative corruption that was so common in the sordid eight years of Charles W. Turnbull always escapes consideration? CWT and his cronies are totally out of sight and out of mind….no one remembers what they did during their orgy of personal greed and corruption?
I am ready to do some direct comparisons with the previous 8 year “Imperial Governor”…are you?
People would be foolish to vote for somebody who claims he was going to get set up, then proceeded to put himself in position to get set up. Well I never……….
@Herb
We are not about to put Turnbull back in, that is why Jimmy can’t go anywhere. This is not about a comparison to what we had. They are both bad.
John promised to be different . John promised TRANSPARENCY and ACCOUNTABILITY.
Instead we got more of the same(exponentially). People of integrity are gone from this Administration. John deJongh is in a conspiracy to defraud the people of the Virgin Islands. Diageo, Alpine, Property Taxes, Southland Gaming, Rawanda, the Fake Beyounce concert. On and On.
Name ONE contract John negotiated and signed that is a good deal for the people.
