How dare you, Mario Moorhead?

How dare you propose to use the system to your advantage and register to vote in the upcoming primary election as a Democrat? How dare you attach your name, your image, your power and your standing in the community to the most significant and historical political movement in Virgin Islands History – the strategic use of the electoral system to depose Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr.?

Just look at how your actions are upsetting people! Didn’t you hear Mrs. Jeris Browne last week denounce you harshly on her radio program en Espanol? Didn’t you say that her vicious attack made you a new “anus?” Didn’t your actions drive her to call you (and that other provocateur) Lawrence “Recon” Olive murderers?

What in the world makes you think you are worthy to join the ranks of those such as Mrs. Browne? Don’t you know who she is?

She is the mother of convicted murderer Jeffrey Browne, who awaits sentencing on 11 counts after a killing spree on Christmas Day, 2007.

She is the wife of Bureau of Motor Vehicles Director Jeris Browne who, with Lt. Governor Gregory Francis was reported to be at the Herbert Grigg Nursing Home on St. Croix last week “assisting” the elderly residents to register for provisional ballots for the primary.

(“Lord have mercy,” a Grigg employee who witnessed the “registration” effort told CIF, “they so desperate they in here telling these old people they have to vote for deJongh.”)

And you, Mr. Moorhead, think you, and others like you, have the right to make sure that you, and those who follow you, become members of the Democratic Party to return the government of the Virgin Islands to the people- all of the people – and not just the chosen few?

You’re damn right you do. And so do the hundreds and perhaps thousands of others who are filing into the Board of Elections offices across the Territory – some for the very first time – to make sure their voices are heard on September 11 and beyond.

Six member of the St. Croix board of Elections occupied this tent on the grounds of the Hovensa Refinery last week at a registration event.

It is a sign of the power of the movement that sharp criticism is being leveled at those who are finally realizing that the power of numbers trumps the power of money and privilege. It is a sign of the power of the movement that while St. Croix residents have struggled to gain the cooperation of the Board of Elections to sponsor registration drives during large public events, that this same board would host an all-day registration event, complete with six of the seven local board members, in a Hovensa Parking lot last week – during working hours on a weekday – to allow a controlled segment of the population access to the process.

However, in positive contrast, long lines of new voters were reported at the “Expo” held by the Board of Elections on St. Thomas on Saturday. Participants reported that people waited happily for long hours in the hot sun to register for the Democratic Party.

But the work is not done. For the more than 6,000 voters whose names have been removed from the rolls, time is running out. The deadline to register to vote in this all important primary is Wednesday, August 11.

For the first time in Virgin Islands history, a sitting governor is being challenged in his party primary. We will know for sure by 5 p.m. Tuesday just how many challengers will be in the race. And while the high-priced dinners and cocktail parties have continued, with an apparent ignorance of the movement growing around them, a quiet determined revolution is happening. And, in the words of the great Gil Scott Heron – The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. (clip below)

So to Mrs. Browne and those like her spewing venom at those who are taking their rightful place in the process we say “la gente en casas de cristal no debe tirar piedras.”*

And to the standard bearer who perhaps better than anyone exemplifies the energy of empowerment, we say,

“God Bless You Mario Moorhead!”

*”People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.”

Raymond and Lorna will find it more difficult to steal the election for their bosses, if they were so inclined of course.

    Mario Moorehead for Senate!!!

  12. Anonymous on August 13, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Jack, Mario is disqualified for life from the Senate by V.I. law. He could however run for the Delegate to Congress or Governor but not the V.I. Senate even though he has paid his debt to society. He would probably win if allowed to file. Do expect the law to change as the current Senators hate competition.

…..I think you meant to say DO NOT ‘expect the law to change…..’

  14. Anonymous on August 13, 2010 at 3:10 pm

Yes indeed…the law should change but wont since those in the Senate don’t want competition and Mario would take one of their seats for sure.
