Nelson Withdraws Due To Lack Of Running Mate – Was Fear Of A “Tyrant” A Contributing Factor?

Nelson calls for removal of "tyrant" in Government House; says supporters can still write him in for Governor

The lack of a running mate has forced Sen. Terrence “Positive” Nelson to withdraw his formal candidacy for Governor and refocus his efforts on retaining his seat in the Virgin Islands Legislature.

But Nelson remained adamant that voters must remove the “tyrant” in Government House, even if the vote they now cast in that race will not be for him and said that fear of repercussions may have played a role in his ability to find a candidate for lieutenant governor.

At a news conference Wednesday morning, Nelson, a candidate of the Independent Citizens Movement (ICM) Party,  elaborated on a detailed platform that included his stands on numerous issues including crime, health care, infrastructure, the financial health of the Territory and energy, including an assertion that the VI Water and Power Authority should be replaced  by a publicly owned utility.

But after outlining his position, Nelson began to speak of the unexpected challenges he faced in finding a running mate and his grave disappointment in the fact that no one had yet to “come forward” to join him in his quest for Governor. And he intimated that the reluctance of qualified citizens to come forward and join him came in part from fear of backlash for opposing the status quo.

And then, with an emotion he described as “insurmountable grief,” Nelson disclosed his political plans for the immediate future.

So absent the emergence of a late entry, the race for Government House is now between the winner of the Democratic Primary on September 11 and candidate Kenneth Mapp.

But while his direction has changed, Nelson has not given up entirely on a shot at the Governor’s seat, and said that if voters are dissatisfied with their remaining choices, that they should feel free to write him in as their gubernatorial choice.

Throughout his presentation, Nelson was firm and direct in his criticism of the administration of Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr., and closed the meeting by giving a definitive statement on why there needs to be a change in Government House.

I doubt Donastorg paid for a running and Norma was just on the radio and said that Mapp didnt pay for one either.

I agree. Positive was the only Positive candidate in the race. If we are still waiting for someone new to enter I hope it’s not Jimmy. Nothing new about Jimmy.

@ Anonymous 1:47 I think it’s because it’s a given that most are anti-De Jongh. At least that’s why I don’t bother mentioning it. We all know deJonghs’s failings.

Now the race is between Mapp and Donastorg. I dont think either are bad choices.

Donastorg and Baptiste are the Choice for Change.

The fact that Senator Nelson insinuated that you have to pay for a Lt. Governor and did not proceed to give us facts just shows you who he really cares about. If he cared about the people of the Virgin Islands, he would have said what truly happened. He is being unfair and is hiding “facts” from the people who supposedly “loves”. Senator Nelson let the people know that you had hoped to be bought out of the race, which is why you announced so early, so that you could complete that big house you are building. You are no different from the rest of the polictrickians :-) maybe even worse.

That was a horrible and untrue thing to say. Luz everyone KNOWS that Glen Smith was paid by John de Jongh to be your Lt Gov. In your speech you said that not if, but WHEN you lose you will throw your support behind the deJongh/Francis team.

St Croix knows you are a fraud and you will not make it out of the primary!

Bloggers, this is the question. CIF please erase blogs that do not answer the question.
I think that a lot of people are not only afraid of deJongh to run with Nelson. Even some white people are starting to whisper that he is a thief, and incompetent and that Diageo has been revealed to be a ridiculous deal or at least an under the carpet take for deJongh. Some white business people are afraid to talk against him lest he set the IRS or the Fire dept, or DLCA on them for some bogus violation.

That said, I also think that Positive seemed the least likely to win candidate, so that not many people were willing to spend the time and money running with him, to have to lose. So Positive would be the candidate most likely to need to pay for a running mate.
When you consider that Donastorg was begging to run as Mapp’s second, you see that even Foncie realized that Mapp was the candidate with the better odds. (Not saying anything about the value of either of them or their qualifications for the job)

deJongh’s tyranny has become legendary, and has even dwarfed that of the former Governor Schneider:
    1. inappropriate relationships with his employees’ wives, and if this is not a hostile work place, I don’t know what is
    2. firing people for mentioning a pregnancy and a love child
    3. firing people for voicing their opinion about the Diageo deal, one of whom, Bennie Rivera, was very appropriate in his criticism since the deal was negotiated outside of the EDA and does not in anyway resemble any of the usual EDA benefits
    4. arresting Kendall Petersen for weed, when the urine at Govt. House is full of cocaine metabolites
    5. arraigning Donastorg for domestic violence when the complainer recanted

deJongh is a tyrant. And I hope that people will either vote for Luz or Foncie, and end this tyranny, historically, in the primary

  16. Anonymous on August 4, 2010 at 6:12 pm

    Donastorg/ Baptiste will do it.

  17. Anonymous on August 4, 2010 at 6:14 pm

All roads leadt to the st croix Donastorg hgeadquarters tonight.

  18. Anonymous on August 4, 2010 at 6:54 pm

    Fear of a TYRANT,

Donastorg was NEVER going to run as Mapp’s LT Governor. So please stop spreading those rumors. If Donastorg had accepted Mapp’s plea to run as his LT Governor then the team would have been Mapp/Donastorg and not Mapp/Sekou. Lets be honest here.

  19. Anonymous on August 4, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Donastorg for the Primary. Mapp for the General.

  20. Anonymous on August 4, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Luz will never get my vote for the primary. If Luz cared about St Croix when would he say he would endorse de Jongh in the general election?
