“Unity, Accountability and Social Justice” Theme Of May 15 March and Rally on St. Thomas

May 10, 2010

It is hard to imagine a more appropriate time for a march and rally aimed at at peacefully addressing the serious concerns facing the Virgin islands community.

All Virgin Islanders are urged to join in a march and rally on Saturday, May 15, entitled “Unity, Accountability and Social Justice.” The event is open to all Virgin Islanders who have concerns on any topic and begins at 10 a.m. at Market Square on St. Thomas. The march will end at Emancipation Garden where speakers will address pressing concerns facing the VI Community.

Organizers have asked participants to wear green to symbolize a fresh beginning. Participants are also invited to bring placards and signs highlighting their areas of concern. All community groups from the Territory are encouraged to attend and participate and organizers estimate that the event will end around 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

I am not a supporter of Mapp. I am a supporter of another candidate who opposes the governor.

Having said that, I see nothing wrong in Mapp’s people joining the march. Heck, my candidate should also do the same thing!

What I do find wrong is the governor’s mis-management of our affairs.

Regardless of who marches, the governor and his people as we all know will not be pleased.

If the organizers are so confident of their turnout in St. Thomas this Saturday why are they importing a boat load of Crucians? Listen, we have business to conduct and money to make over here. No time for colicky babies with their constant bellyaching.

Please do all of us civilized, peace-loving St. Thomians a favor and keep your rubbish on St. Croix!

This rally is about the “social and economic” issues that effect the way of life of every person living in these Virgin Islands. As long as we continue to rally around a person instead of a philosophy, we will continue to give our power over to one individual. What types of policies are in the best interest for all in our community?

In “fixing” our challenges, when a situation is fixed for one person, how many people benefit from the situation being corrected? Are we as members of this society willing to do the actual work it will take to force change that benefits to whole?

We come from creative as well as wholly brilliant peoples. We have the power to make the changes we require so our children will have a bright future in the Virgin Islands to look forward to. We all have skills and talents needed to help steer us on this journey.

Know that TPTB are desperate for us to go back to sleep, but their greed has awakened a sleeping giant. Our community. We are the backbone of this great economy. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Didn’t our ancestors with one voice stop the exploitation of their free labor. Seems like we are still on the plantation, just under a different illusion. The People UNITED CAN NEVER BE DIVIDED!!!!

We all need clean air to breathe, access to clean water, access to nutritious and healthy food at affordable prices, access to affordable housing. access to affordable renewable energy programs, we have a right to live in safe environment, more love between us, etc. If we can agree on most of the above, can we start working toward making these subjects a priority, then we will realize how important we each are to this process.
    Power to the People!!!

Your right that Kenneth Mapp is one selfish man that wanted this historic march to be fixed for his own political gain instead of fixed to benefit the masses of the people.

Hopefully Kenneth Mapp and his campaign will read your blog and learn from the knowledge you left behind.

Mapp please always remember: The People UNITED CAN NEVER BE DIVIDED!!!!

We will never forget what you attempted to do with this historic march Mapp because you are no damn good.

mapp, if the crucians don’t want foncie then why are his food sales and meetings so big? Donastorg meetings are neck and neck to yours in the numbers that attend. Stop spreading propaganda.

I was not referring to any particular candidate, but to all who attempt to hijack the people’s March/Rally to promote their campaign for election or re-election. We already have examples sitting in our legislature & government house who used the people’s suffering to move themselves to a better place in our community and have not sponsored or cosponsored legislation or executive orders that would close loopholes they know continue to exist in our system.

These areas include but not limited to education (especially knowledge of self), labor rights, the preservation of our natural environment, energy policy planning, preventative as well as general health care, agriculture (being able to feed oneself), housing, homelessness, etc. Many of the above are the common denominator in the issue of “crime” we continue to wring our collective hands about. What has this person done for our community? What are they currently doing? How does their future plans include us?

We must be discerning in those we support for elected office. How does that person treat their family/loved ones? The way their family is taken care us should be an indication of the way we will be served by this person as a community.

  20. Accountability on May 15, 2010 at 2:40 am

The march is about accountability and social justice. Why are we discussing campaign electives instead of the crime that’s going on here on the islands? We want justice for the governor and his administration to account for the millions of dollars that’s being spent. I want to know how they are going to manage the funds going forward to 2011. We will need another loan to borrow additional millions in the future? Accountability – Our goal is as taxpayers, should be focused on how the governor is responsible for misspending and mismanaging funds. Where are the cutbacks in the budget and salaries?
