Can They Be Objective?

April 12, 2010

As we approach Election 2010, CIF will be taking a look a number of issues relative to the election process. Today we look at some of the members of the Virgin Islands Board of Elections.

The Boards of Elections are established in Title 18, Chapter 3, Section 41, of the Virgin Islands Code. There are two election districts within the Virgin Islands : the District of St. Croix and the District of St. Thomas/St. John. Each district has a separate Board of Elections consisting of seven members who are elected by the electors in each district to terms of four years. The St. Thomas/St. John Board shall include at least two members who are residents of St. John . No more than four members of the same political party shall be members of each board.

The Board members listed below were duly elected and, since their election, have been placed in significant roles in Government positions. Do you believe they can be objective in matters related to the upcoming election?

Raymond Williams, Chief of Staff, Lt. Governor’s Office; Claudette Georges, Director of Fiscal Affairs, LEPC; Jackie Heyliger, Asst. Director of VITEMA; Leona Smith, St. John Administrator; Dodson James, St. Croix Administrator; Lorna Thomas, Director, Department of Planning and Natural Resource.

The members of the Virgin Islands Board of Elections listed here hold significant jobs in VI Government positions. Does this pose a conflict of interest in their Board of Elections roles?

A link to the full VI Code is located in the Government Resources box in the right hand sidebar of this site and also on the External Links page.

DeJongh and his administration has increased the public’s lack of trust in government ten fold. We cannot trust the political appointees, the boards, the police, the courts, the Delegate to Congress, the senators, the sensus, etc. Without trust, everything is questioned for an ulterior motive. Our government is being seriously crippled by blatant curruption from the leadership!

@Administrator. Thanks for the link. I’d read it. Everyone else should, especially what happens to you government job if you get elected:

§ 2. Eligibility of government personnel for public office

The deJongh’s Administration appreciates the information on this site. It is helping us develop our strategies. We do thank you for giving tips on how we should respond to the propaganda.

…..and who’s giving it ‘tips’ on how each indiviual member might fare after the November elections? What ‘strategies’ are being ‘developed’ for such a scenario?

Might you be looking to CIF for that too?

Good point.Quite a nod to the site though – in the last months it has gone from a venue that was very one note to a media channel that’s filling a void that may have always existed but was much more protected before this internet age.

I can’t say for sure, but my guess is that the CIF crew is chuckling at the idea that the Administration (and its minions) are monitoring the site for whatever reason – I say it’s a good indication that what’s happening here is contributing to a growing movement to action that the VI hasn’t seen in some time.

And I’m sure that if they want “tips” on how they’ll fare after the election that at some point, CIF would be happy to provide them!

Isn’t Raymond Williams also a chair of the Democratic Party or a delegate? How many government positions can one person hold? Asst to Francis (basically a do nothing job for big bucks) and on the election board and a Dem rep? Seems like a huge conflict of interest to me……….

    @ ‘Clock’:

No question about it m’man,CIF is filling the void big time.

When people are venting about what’s going on in their personal and professional lives (especially as it relates to their dealings with the public sector)certain truths and frustrations will come to the fore…..creating a tremendous source from which a wealth of knowledge will come about.

Absolutely, dem bwoys at CIF are more than ready to provide both ‘sight’ and ‘insight’ to and for those who have eyes and yet can’t see.

    Going to be good.
