Sublime Arrogance: Governor Responds To IG Report With Accusations, Defiance

Governor Calls Probe "Woefully Inadequate; Will Not Pay Back Without Court Order

     Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr.

Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr.

Well, now we have read it.

Every painful, deluded, convoluted word of it. And here is our conclusion:

You must be joking.

In seven pages of rambling denial and blistering criticism, Governor John P. deJongh, Jr, completed another leg of what is apparently a political kamikaze mission by dismissing the findings of the US Inspector General’s report on Mafoliegate and declaring the IG incompetent in the process.

And the commitment he made in November to pay back a portion of the $490,000 spent on his home is now off the table – he has concluded “no funds need be returned unless and until there is a final judicial finding establishing that the funds were not properly reprogrammed.”

In a flagrant slap at the role of the Legislature, he said “surely whether or not all of the Senators voting (on Act 6917) understood what a particular reprogramming was specifically for… cannot be relevant to the questions of whether the subsequent use of the funds … was proper or improper.”

He went on to dismiss as “hardly relevant” public testimony from Senators who have stated they did not intend that the funds be used to renovate the Governor’s property.

Calling the investigation “woefully inadequate” he all but accused the IG and the local IG office of collusion with Senator Adlah “Foncie” Donastorg by stating “the local commentary has focused on the fact that the Senator who filed the complaint with your office is both the most strident of partisans as well as linked to the head of your local office.”

Thereafter, the response is an exercise in finger pointing. The person who should have been questioned about this is “the Senator who actually sponsored the reprogramming,” referring to Sen. Carlton “Ital” Dowe, the only senator who was copied on correspondence specifically addressing the improvements at the governor’s home. He went on to dismiss as “hardly relevant” public testimony from Senators who have stated they did not intend that the funds be used to renovate the Governor’s property.

Governor – we’ll see you in court.

Did Governor deJongh respond appropriately to the IG report on Mafolie?

    Dear Anonymous:
Is your best defense of the beleaguered governor a reference to the fact that other governors had security booths on their property? Will that fly in court? Two wrongs make a right? Did the last governor’s booth cost $490,000.00 or $4900? Puh-lease!

Using that rationale, someone could committ serial killing and then say that Jack the Ripper got away. We campaigned on ending corruption. Come on people. Wrong is wrong even when drinking the koolaid.

And if he were seeking a legal opinion on use of legislative funds, why didn’t he seek the legal opinion of the Legislature of the Virgin Islands.

You see why we need an elected attorney general? And a local grand jury? Where is Rush Limbaugh when you need him?

  3. Government Watch on February 18, 2010 at 6:44 am

Speaking of legislative funds, where is the transparency of an audit of the legislature promised by King Hill?
We need to know if we are giving way too much in money to the senate among some of them traveling excessively to Rio, Italy, Denmark, Cuba…all in the name of ‘dong the people’s business’.
How many trips to Dominica for King Hill to do ‘his other job’ on the people’s dime?
Where is the $20,000 per senator contribution to the Health Dept. that was promised, ON THE RECORD by Hill?
These guys are living large off the backs of us.

    Don’t Stop The Carnival:

Here is the link to the CNN report on ARRA funds.

They should have toured Mafoliegate to see a completed capital project. I think it’s the only capital project completed during this administration.

  5. Soldier Crab on February 18, 2010 at 9:30 am

@ ‘GRAMMAR POLICE’:While you were pointing out to the governor his ‘impropper use of capital letters’ in his letter to the IG (ya know, upper G and lower g an’t'ing),you should have also explained to him the benefits of the ‘upper bunk’ and the ‘lower bunk’ as expressed by white collar criminals who have been incarcerated for crimes such as his….i.e.using public funds for the enrichment of one’s self.

@’WTF’: Thanks for sharing that link. Was nice seeing pics of
familiar places on the rock.At least some good came out of CNN’s visit in that the long-awaited report on the ARRA funds has been released.Whereas Senator Hill seemed quite animated in his interview, the governor looked as if he’d rather have beeen elsewhere.

  7. Well well well on February 18, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Thanks for the link. We need to let CNN do a segment on the Stupid bush. They will be back but not for about the bush. Why did they not use the money to construct a side walk for the poor kids. They need a side walk more than he needed a all weather Guard house. well well well

  8. Wake Up on February 18, 2010 at 6:12 pm

I’m still waiting for the governor’s psycophants to explain to us why everyone in his administration refuses to testify when sworn under oath, including those not named in the lawsuit. If nothing wrong was done, what are they afraid of?

The gov doesnt have a clue as to what is really going on, and even if he reads this blog, he cant undo what he has done.
CNN didn’t call and ask him to highlight his appropriations of stimulus funds, somebody dedicated to making a real positive change tipped off CNN. The gov probably cant fit through the doorway now as his ego is so big that he made it on CNN! Clueless…
There have been more appropriate contacts made to the feds, and more is coming to the self-centered thief and all his cronies he pulled in to get certain things done. It’s a new day dawning, and it’s about time, and it’s all because there are people in our community who really DO care about the community, it’s not just politricks as DeJongh has claimed. Nobody can save his butt, nobody. He won’t even be able to get the same ones to bend over again, as they too can see the writing on the wall…

Yes Thanks for the link to the CNN video, I will tell you it did not make us look good at all, I am really sad about all what is taking place in the VI, things have never been this bad before, I just dont know what we are going to do, I got so mad I wanted to write them and tell them that they need to come back and let dejongh tell them about all the peolpe money he put into his home.

I clearly heard Jim Acosta say he came across this story while working on another one. Anyone else wondering what that other story is?

  12. Anonymous on February 19, 2010 at 9:27 am

I’m not sure what Jim Acosta is working on, but here is a link to his blog regarding his report on the USVI.

Check out, on the legislatures website, what Dowe and the legislature stated were the purposes for which the money in 6917 could be used.

    Here is what Dowe sponsored

    Sponsors: Carlton Ital Dowe
    CoSponsors:
Subject: To amend Act No. 6427 Section 22 Nadir Bridge Flood Control Projects $1,305,000.00 to move $1,300,000.00 to the Department of Public Works for the construction of and/or the resurfacing of roads, road drainage engineering design and construction repair various construction projects.

  14. Woke up on February 20, 2010 at 1:28 pm

But what I saw was that the only sponsor to this bill is Sen. Dowe so it leads me to believe that he surely was the only one knows his intent.

  15. Anonymous on February 20, 2010 at 1:58 pm

Knowledge is power! Unless my vision is poor the last part of the sentence reads”and construction repair various construction project.”Does this mean construction of various projects other than roads? Is it saying repair as well as construction of project or just repair of construction projects? As it is written, the above sentence needs to be sent to the Governor for repairs. It is poorly written;however, the distinction was made that the fund was to be used for various projects including resurfacing of roads. Further, since only Sen.Dowe’s name is the only name given and he is the sponsor, he should provide the answers concerning the matter.

  16. Marie on February 22, 2010 at 1:35 pm

Although our “governor” dismisses the relevance of the IG’s reference to testimony relating to VI Senators, the “intent” and “spirit” of the legislation is central to derailing his rebuttal.

Unrepentence and lack of humility is becoming a hallmark for John P. deJongh, Jr.

I suggest the IG put the gloves back on and give him what he should have received in the beginning and teach him who really is boss.

deJongh is finished. He just doesn’t know it, yet. Too much to overcome before the election.

@Don’t Stop the Carnival – You are a mess. I know Nugent professionally and personally; you can call him a lot of things (even a jerk at times) but “submissive” or lazy is not one of them. You seem only able to piss disparaging remarks about people, can’t back it up and don’t offer nothing of substance in return. Where are your big ideas to fix something – anything. If the best you can do is call him a name then he already got your number. Don’t be a Hater man; be a doer. Envy is a b*&ch and her sister’s name is “Don’t Stop the Carnival”. :)
