Note To Sen. Hill: The Only “Hostage” Is The Truth

VI contractor moves quickly to correct "misconception" about road repair delays

Sen. President Louis P. Hill

Sen. President Louis P. Hill

Those road repairs would be moving a lot quicker around here if there were only contractors who had the equipment and commitment to get them done.  That, in essence, is what Department of Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls told the Legislature Wednesday when questioned about the lack of progress on already funded road repair projects in the Virgin Islands.

But the president of Virgin islands Paving says Smalls is incorrect, and quickly corrected the “misconception” in a letter to the Senate president on Thursday.

Smalls continued his testimony by saying that he’s asked the contractors to lease more equipment to get the work done, but, alas, with little success.

This prompted Senate President Louis Patrick Hill to make this statement:

“So the companies are holding us hostage,” he said.

Not so, says VI Paving President Robert Schierloh. His company did respond to Smalls’ concerns about the disparity between the amount of work to be done and the available resources by securing a loan from Banco Popular and spending $1 million on new equipment since last October.

So naturally he was concerned with both Smalls’ testimony and Hill’s response.

In his letter to Hill, dated Feb.4, 2010, Schierloh wrote, “We are contacting you to correct a misconception that was created on the above referenced hearing dated February 3, 2010,” referring to Smalls’ comments.

Schierloh went on to write that in addition to purchasing additional equipment to meet the needs of the road work, the company has also invested in a quality control laboratory that is the only “certified testing laboratory for road repair in the Virgin Islands.”

And just to be clear, he added, “Virgin Islands Paving Company has been assisting the Department of Public Works with road construction projects for 28 years and we believe that we are upholding our commitment to our community to try and meet the demands placed on us.”

He attached the loan confirmation and a list of all the new equipment to the letter (attached below).

So again, we are left to wonder. Was Smalls’ unaware of the sizeable investment one of his primary contractors had made to meet the growing road repair needs? Did he forget about it under the pressure of testifying to the Legislature?

Surely he’d want to be clear about this, particularly when the Senate was visibly frustrated with the slow pace with which these projects are being completed.

We’re just glad that the Senate President has better idea now of whom and what is really holding these projects “hostage.” And it doesn’t look like it’s VI Paving.

Any further news on the Verne Hodge candidacy? Isn’t there anyone else besides DeWolfe,Foncie,Mapp,et al who can generate
a ground swell of interest and rescue the people of the V.I.in their time of need?

  2. June on February 10, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I’m very surprize other candiates aren’t coming forward as yet. I saw what appears to be dewolf’s camp getting started in the mall on St. Thomas. The others need to come out now. Francis is very quite will he be running with dewolf again? After hardly saying or doing anything. With all due respect to chuckie and bert I believe their time has passed. and We need person in there who will not only look out for themselves but for the people of the virgin Islands!

I continue to say DONASTORG IN 2010 the time is NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Anonymous on February 10, 2010 at 4:59 pm

I say Mapp is the man to get it done

  4. Anonymous on February 10, 2010 at 7:45 pm

The arrogant and coniving Senator Hill, the biggest mistake the people in St. Thomas made was re-electing him to the senate. The next biggest mistake was when those “progressive thinking” senators, like Sentors Malone, Richards, Nelson and Orilly, Donastrog of the 28th allowed him to become senate president, a man not from St. Thomas or St.John, who has used virgin islanders (close to home) to get ahead and then toss them out like an old shoe for the newer. He neees to be thought a good lesson, and by the way he loves white people like hog loves mud, quite a sicko, if you ask me. SEND HIM AND A FEW OTHERS HOME.

  5. Anonymous on February 10, 2010 at 7:58 pm

The Senators you name did not support Hill as Senate President and Hill worked with the Governor and cronies to remove Donastorg as Senate President so I don’t think you can blame him at all in this case.

  6. Anonymous on February 10, 2010 at 8:20 pm

You are right Sen. Malone would never support Hill. and yes he should go home, he really did her worng for his new thing.

  7. Anonymous on February 10, 2010 at 8:43 pm

Yes, he did her WRONG, but ladies of St. Thomas right the wrong by sending him a message straight HOME with a BANG. He will try to get your votes, but smile in his face- like he likes to smile- and send the b—–d him.

We, it is a fact that the Senators named above did not vote for him being president, but migosh by now there should have had a palace coupe right after he was made President to toss him out, like they did to the sensible Donastrog.

    @ Soldier Crab on February 9, 2010 at 1:00 am ,

The answer succinctly is no! There is no other candidates who can create a ground swell of interest.

We have two excellent alternatives to de Jongh: Mapp or Donastorg.

Hill is a formidable political opponent.

Especially when he put’s elevator shoes on his size six feet, looks you straight up your nostril and shakes your hand with his little paw.

    King of the Hill?

@ ‘EWO’: Should be a tight race.Senator Nelson, from my vantage point, would be better off remaining in the senate where he can
garner the experience and general wherewithal he sorely lacks at this point.But….ambition isn’t easily quieted.

  12. Curious Joe on February 12, 2010 at 10:14 pm

Where on St. Thomas are they manufacturing elevator shoes? It seems that they have quite a few “litte men” walking around in them.

  13. Anonymous on February 13, 2010 at 7:09 am

What happened to the audit of the legislature?

  14. Anonymous on February 13, 2010 at 11:22 am

Anonymous Feb 11 @6:46 has me laughing hysterically. ‘elevator shoes’, ‘little paw’ and ‘size six feet’ too funny.

I have shared this with so many people and all of them have the same reaction (endless laughing and tears).

When I see Hill I’m afraid I will end up laughing right in his face. This one should go down in history. Ha, Ha, Ha!

  15. Anonymous on February 14, 2010 at 7:26 am

You are sooooooo right, it had us laughing too, but he should know that we will be dead serious in November about teaching him a lesson for being bad about 1. the palace coup, 2. the radio situation, and 3 doing the “WRONG” thing.

  16. I Understand on February 14, 2010 at 3:54 pm

    @ EWO

Senator Nelson is far from ready for this race. I spoke with him at the agriculture fair grounds and he turned me off. He said that if he stayed in the senate he would become a bitter and angry person. This doesn’t speak well for him because we need a level headed strong minded candidate capable of thinking rationally about the issues. Then he is also promoting legalization of marijuana. I think he sincerely just doing this because he sees this opportunity lost in future because of the constitution.

You guys on this site are the best. I too found an earlier posting very funny.

Paraphrase:Senator Hill wears elevator shoes, has little paws and wears size six shoes.

    LOL

  18. Government Watch on February 15, 2010 at 11:23 am

Nelson needs the additional income to pay for the huge house he is building off of North Shore Road in La Vallee……..
He can be seen there during the week, when he should be working FOR US in his senate office!!!!!

  19. I Understand on February 15, 2010 at 3:16 pm

It not La Vallee, it’s on Salt River Road.

  20. Barren Spot resident on February 20, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Didn’t know that the good Senator (Nelson) was abondoning the people of Barren Spot. What happened to the house he lives in Barren Spot (right around the corner from me and among the common people ain’t it good enough no longer? This is just another one of those elected officials who become turn coat now that have gotten into the Legislator.
