Alpine Town Meeting Set for Wednesday
An open forum that will provide an opportunity to discuss all aspects of the Alpine Waste-To-Energy project is the goal of the Town Hall Meeting Wednesday, January 13, from 6-8 p.m. at Gertrude’s Restaurant, St. Croix.
The meeting is being sponsored by Crucians In Focus (CIF) in conjunction with the Virgin Islands Ratepayers Association. Admission is free.
CIF President Michael Springer, who will serve as moderator for the event, said the meeting will be an opportunity for participants to hear the rationale for and concerns about the project, and said the format is designed to make the most productive use of the available time.
The meeting will begin with a 10 minute (approx) presentation by each of the panelists (listed below) during which time information on the project and community concerns will be given. Their initial presentations will be uninterrupted.
Following the presentations, there will be a question and answer period. Participants will be provided with forms they can use to write their questions and the panelist(s) to whom the question is addressed. Questions will be directed to the appropriate panelist(s) by the moderator.
“Participants can submit as many questions as they like throughout the time the panelists are giving their presentations,” Springer said. “In the interest of time, and to get as much information discussed in the time we have, we believe this format will be the most effective for this event.”
The panelists are St. Croix Senator Nellie O’Reilly; Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority Executive Director Hugo Hodge; Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority Executive Director May Adams Cornwall; Paul Chakroff, Virgin Islands Ratepayers Association; Mario Moorehead, historian and community activist; community activists Steffen Larsen, Dwayne Callwood, George Moore and Clarence Payne; and former Senator Adelbert Bryan.
“As you can see the panel represents a wide range of views on this project and we know there are strong opinions out there on this matter,” Springer said. “We hope the makeup of the panel shows that it is in the public’s interest to get the full picture.”
The forum will also be broadcast live on WSTX Radio, 970 AM.
If you cannot attend and would like to submit a question, please add it here as a comment we we’ll add it to our list.

I would rather be called a whinner than to be known as a thief, liar and an embarassment to the people of these islands.
‘Say Good bye to John Dejongh’
Alpine is not a done deal! Not yet!My prediction is that it will be finalized;however, the six negative senators will vote against it. There are four negative, anti-development senators from St. Croix and two from St. Thomas. The real majority leader is Sen.White. The triple-force(White, Hill and Dowe)has clout!Alpine, just like Diageo,is the real deal! All the hot air about health is ridiculous. We will all die eventually.
Those who are ranting and raving about health concerns are breathing hot, noxious gas from the mindless creatures like themselves.Be prepared to call 911 when the votes are counted. They can not stop progress. Alpine will become a reality.
This has to be the worst Administration and Legistlature in VI History … Well the majority …. Something must be done .
It saddens me how mindless and ignorant both of you sound. Don’t you realize that without your health life in it’s essence is meaningless.
You obviously don’t care about your children, grand-children, nieces, nephews, parents, aunts, uncles, friends or yourself. How sad indeed.
I’m all for development, once it is in the best interest of the people.
No one in their right mind would choose CANCER over health. And yes, death is a road we all must travel, but why speed up the process with Alpine.
Once Alpine’s contaminants reach the air and water, both St. Thomas and St. Croix can say bye-bye to tourism. We will be know as the Toxic Virgin Islands.
Governor we know you do not care for the people, but at least act like you do . Those comments you are writing on this blog are pure evil.
I would not vote again for Donastorg if he was the only one on the ballot! Ditto deJongh. Had it with both of them.
I think it is time the Fed’s took over and cleaned house and shook up the corrupt officials…….lock them up and throw away the keys.
Of course there is no corruption in the Federal Govt.
Get a grip there is corruption in all forms of govt including the Feds. What we need is some honest people that care about people. It’s really pretty simple. Can we find them in the VI, not so simple. Our young educated Virgin Islanders have taken flight to the mainland and not returned. The brain drain has left us with somewhat of a void. Thus we keep recycling the same old crooks. ANYONE but deJONGH
Why is my comment being moderated?
Donastorg 2010… We all have our opinions , and ill never vote for deJongh again … Respect your opinion Paleeze…. I will be voting for him though .
Real Change,
I have had my comments moderated as well;however, I have used no derogatory words.
The senators visited a site that uses pet coke. The use of pet coke is not an experiment. If the mindless creatures living during the time that the Hess Refinery was being considered were taken seriously, we would not have had Hovensa today. Those who do not want progress are irrationally fearful of development. They are always going to be cynical.
Yes to progress, no to dying of pollutants because another ‘native son’ got paid off.
I have been trying to get into 970 this morning, but no success. Has anyone asked WAPA or VIWMA why it is not in the contract to have Koch be responsible for the maintained removal of the ash? Right now it seems that we the people of the community are going to have to give faith to two divisions of our government that have not been demonstrating a capacity to handle basic needs such as public lighting and island cleanliness. What allows for the belief that either of these two divisions can handle the task of responsible ash removal? Aren’t we just making way for Koch to pass the responsibility to us while gatting us to pay them for having NO responsibility? It just seems wrong.
