Governor: Confirm or Deny
It appears that before there was an $85,000 Guardhouse and a $98,000 Security Fence, there was a $156,000 driveway laid at Governor John P. deJongh, Jr.’s personal residence.
Yes, we are serious.
The attached documents show that in October, 2007, Darryl Smalls, then Commissioner Designee of the Department of Public Works, gave the notice to proceed on the driveway project to the Better Roads and Asphalt Company of St. Thomas.
Cost of this project? Reportedly, $156,160 of local and federal Highway Funds.
Clearly some explanation is required, and Senator Adlah “Foncie” Donastorg has requested it.
In a letter to the Governor dated July 1, 2009, Sen. Donastorg has challenged deJongh to “confirm or deny specifically as to whether this and other improvement projects actually took place and were paid for in whole or in part with public funds.”
In a separate letter, also dated July 1, Donastorg has also requested that Smalls produce and deliver to him “all documents and records of Public Works Department endeavors associated with repairs and improvements to Governor John deJongh’s personal residence at 23-8 Estate Mafolie” by close of business on July 1.
In our opinion, any responsible public official would promptly refute assertions of the serious nature that these inquiries represent if, in fact, they were incorrect or grounded in inaccurate information.
We’re waiting.
Governor: confirm or deny.

Keep trying hard Foncie. You will never be Governor of these United States Virgin Islands.
For your information Roger Morgan and Mr. Larsen, Governor’s Residence at Catherineberg is where we give him to live. The historical presence of this structure is awesome and culturally pleasing. How dear you guys criticize the home that people of the Virgin Islands have chosen for their highest leader. You have insulted us by your comments and I am appalled with your criticism. As listen to you and Mr. Larsen describe this residence it took me back to the days of Governor Luis and his wife, who give birth and raised two children in that home and was comfortable. Gov. deJongh thinks he’s too good for the house that his people has given him to live in during his term. Well wake up people of the VI isn’t this a message for us? I think our Governor feels he’s above us natives and whatever we could afford to give him is not good enough for him and his family. Therefore by dividing us with this Constitution, he has managed to separate us from the pack and isolate us bring the rest of the community against us and creating a social problem in our community.
The law is clear the governor shall reside at Government House now Denmark Hill. DeJongh knew it when he ran. Therefore it is highly illegal and “wort less” to live at home and divert thousands of dollars to upgrade his home under the guise of security upgrade. The nerve of this gang to refer to his Mafolie house as the governor’s residence it is not it is the deJongh house. I tell u also that he also owes substantial taxes for the public investment on his property. The whole cabal has ill served the people,,,Maduro who failed to stop the process, Smalls who carried out the mission without questioning, Greaux who lied to the public,Frazier who is a failure as AG, Julito Francis who is a waste, Adam Christian who has no where near his father’s ability, and deJongh who is a shameless opportunist. As was said in early days, a pox of shame upon their houses.
The Cabal is so “fraid” for deh “Job”. Keep a job and lose your soul. SHAME. I see Dr Mills escaped and found another job.
CALLING ALL COMMISSIONERS, DIRECTORS, GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES RUNNING MATE AND EVEN FIRST LADY, NOW IS THE TIME TO LOOK FOR YOUR TRUE CULTURE. THE CULTURE BASED ON INTEGRITY. THE CULTURE WHERE WE DO NOT TAKE WHAT IS NOT OURS, RIGHTFULLY. THE CULTURED WHERE WE RESPECT AND CARE ABOUT OUR EACH OTHER. THE TRUTH WILL COME OUT!! YOU WILL BE SHAMED. STOP DISRESPECTING YOUR LOVE ONES WITH THIS TREACHERY.YOU ARE SHAMING YOUR FAMILY, PAST AND PRESENT.
THE TRUTH SHALL SET US FREE. TOGETHER WE REALLY CAN.
Regardless who is trying to gain the gubernatorial seat this coming election, one thing is for sure it will not be DeJongh.
Senators you better start holding some hearing on this soon or you will be job hunting along with deWolf after the 2010 election.
The silence from Gov’t House, the Legislature and the mainstream media is deafening. The political spin from the supporters is beyond obvious. And the refusal of a talk show host to read a few pages of documents is beyond incompetence. Are these documents what one should expect from a “business man”?
Right now the only Senator at the Legislature of the Virgin Islands that is Honest and has Integrity is Nellie Rivera-O’Reilly . It is now a plesure to listen to the senate hearings because O’Reilly is the one who ask the right questions . The other Senators they know that the hearings are being televised and they are all about putting on a Show for the public the ones who are elected for St.Thomas . I do not know when the people on St.Thomas is going to wake up and smell the Bush Tea and CLEAN HOUSE get Rid of these CORRUPT,IMMORAL,DISHONEST Senators . Keep the it going Donastorg we know you are all alone but we hear you .
“Ancestral Native Virgin Islanders” what a proud and beautiful title. If that title is to come with “advantage” it must also come with “responsibility”. The responsibility to stand up and speak out loud and clear when you see pure crap going on. If you don’t speak out against wrong doing than who should? If you are not outraged than who should be. The day is approaching when it is time to march on Gov’t house and protest these wrong doings. Who will take the lead. I am calling on the Ancestral Native Virgin Islanders to lead the way.
The local press has to do better than this! I would expect that by tomorrow there should be some information on this topic. I’m sure that many established organizations such as the newspapers are reluctant to get involved. However, the information is already out.
Senators please, this is not the time to keep quiet. You cannot play innocent for too long without looking bad yourselves.
Senator Hill you were the one responsible for the audit of the Schenider Regional Hospital. What is the problem with calling for an audit of the illegal spending of the Governor. We all understand that the majority is in the governor’s pocket. Fair is fair. If it was an ordinary person the Attorney General would have already filed a case on that person. Attorney General what is the matter. Can the residence of the Virgin Islands file a class action suit against the Governor? He sure is a wolf in sheep clothing.
The Attorney General can’t do squat because his signature is on at least one of the documents on this site. He signed it for “legal sufficiency”. This should be a lesson to all politicians: Don’t surround yourself with people who tell you what you want to hear!
Is this story really anything new? It seems to be the same old tripe that has gone on in the VI forever. Like many of the so-called leaders that came before him, de jongh has proven to be in it for himself and to hell with the rest of the VI. Let them eat cake!
We have a long history of elected officials who have feathered their nests on the backs of the rest of us. Since we are the ones that consistently put them in office, they can only be a reflection of our collective conscience. When we, as individuals, start caring about the greater good for all, then we might really find some REAL leaders.
deWolf presented himself as the change candidate. How were we all to know he would be the biggest criminal.
Our crime as a people is that we trusted him to tell the truth. That he betrayed that trust does not diminish you and me, only deWolf and all that move forward his criminal agenda.
Hallelujah!! Rican is on Ken Mapps’ show revealing all.
However, this whole situation is nothing to celebrate. This could result in an unstable government, and to our shame and embarassment, the feds would step in.
Gov. deJongh is calling the senate into special session on Thursday. His purpose is to urge the senators to deal with matters they have been neglecting. I’m not a good chess player, so can anyone explain this strategy to me? What is de wolf up to?
Congratulations to the senators who supported Donastorg’s request to subpoena documents relative to the redirection of funds.
When will the drama come to a conclusion?
If the governor has blatantly violated the laws of the territory, why not take the matter to CNN? Hearing the same rhetoric repeatedly is becoming boring.I have not been convinced that the governor has committed a crime.
For more intrigue & sensation, someone please provide evidence of wrongdoing and an investigation into the matter by the FEDS.
I heard a man on Roosevelt David’s show saying someone in the media should take pictures of the Guardhouse, the drive and the fence so the public can judge if they are in fact lavish or just security measures. Let the public see.
Are the security enhancements to the personal residence all part of a bigger picture of ongoing plausible deniability?
See Bloomberg report “Bailout of U.S. Banks Gives British Rum a $2.7 Billion Benefit”. (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=amp5wXx35fkc)
If our local news paper (Daily News) has compromised itself and cannot report, then Ryan J. Donmoyer (rdonmoyer@bloomberg.net) at Bloomberg should be given the opportunity.
This story of the governor’s misdeeds will certainly end in a Pulitzer Prize award to the reporting news agency that’s willing to get to the bottom of this story. Grave miscalculations were made in going forward with the granting these potentially “criminal intent” misappropriations of public funds for personal gains.
Gross violations of public trust have been knowingly made by all parties that participated in these misappropriation transactions of public funds to the personal gain of our elected governor. This story deepens with the governor’s own personal press official attempts to obstruct and suppress concern citizens along with elected legislative official with law suits for making these potentially “criminal acts” public.
We have a right as a community to be outrage. We also have the right to exercise our United States Constitutional rights to free speech without threats of law suits from our governor for exposing his selfish acts.
This United States Virgin Islands governor is not above the law. Twisting laws to gain access to the people’s money for the governor’s personal gain at a time when then entire United States along with its territories are experiencing an unprecedented historic financial crisis is a disgrace to the people of our beloved Virgin Islands.
Governor de Jongh,
You said that you could not (would not) forward the Constitutinal draft because it is too “embarrasing”. I hope you won’t be too embarrased when you are led away in handcuffs.
