It appears that before there was an $85,000 Guardhouse and a $98,000 Security Fence, there was a $156,000 driveway laid at Governor John P. deJongh, Jr.’s personal residence.
Yes, we are serious.
The attached documents show that in October, 2007, Darryl Smalls, then Commissioner Designee of the Department of Public Works, gave the notice to proceed on the driveway project to the Better Roads and Asphalt Company of St. Thomas.
Cost of this project? Reportedly, $156,160 of local and federal Highway Funds.
Clearly some explanation is required, and Senator Adlah “Foncie” Donastorg has requested it.
In a letter to the Governor dated July 1, 2009, Sen. Donastorg has challenged deJongh to “confirm or deny specifically as to whether this and other improvement projects actually took place and were paid for in whole or in part with public funds.”
In a separate letter, also dated July 1, Donastorg has also requested that Smalls produce and deliver to him “all documents and records of Public Works Department endeavors associated with repairs and improvements to Governor John deJongh’s personal residence at 23-8 Estate Mafolie” by close of business on July 1.
In our opinion, any responsible public official would promptly refute assertions of the serious nature that these inquiries represent if, in fact, they were incorrect or grounded in inaccurate information.

this forum is about de jongh using public funds to for security enhancements. so far if it was a serious matter I am 100% sure that the federal government would have stepped in by now. However, seeing that the project has been done for what? a year now. and the federal government have not intervened on the matter stating what was done was illegal. i truly believe we are wasting alot of unnecessary time on this. People could use the energy they use here to plan a fundraiser for school since that is what many complain about. But I forgot trust is a major issue with the ppl here and the current administration so I see that the people will do nothing but complain going against the whole idea of Together We Can.
Let us not forget that our previous Governor rented homes on each island for nearly $10000 a month and hardly ever lived. Where was Foncie when this was happening? I’m just getting the feeling Mr. Donastorg has a deep seeded hate for the HONORABLE GOVERNOR JOHN P. DE JONGH JR. How come Donastorg was not complaining then? I’m sure he had 8 years to do so…

I think your statement about this project being done “a year now” inaccurate. Pay attention to the dates in the change orders.

From all accounts the Governor is taking this serious and has a team of attorneys scrutinizing the documents.
