I also had to leave early (to work) and missed most of the program due to the late start but it was a uplifting day. Perhaps a National speaker could be put back on the venue. Didn't Senator Richards bring Minister Farrakhan last year?(the event was packed)

I attended yesterday's Emancipation Ceremonies. Dr. Carlyle Corbin was fascinating and added much insight and intellectual firepower to solving the conundrum that the VI faces today: what status could we, should we be, and why.
Disappointed that the event started late (and I know all about Crucian time), causing me (and others) to leave earlier than we had planned, and thereby missing Mr. Mario Moorhead. He, the keynote speaker, was the highlight and I'm sorry to have missed hearing him speak.
Next year I will be in Frederiksted, from Tea Meeting to Quadrille and dem some.
And hats off to Junie Bomba. I can blow conch too, but not like that! Mary Moorhead, Pamela Richardson, thank you for all your persistance and dilegence in putting this all together.
And conratulations to everyone who, behind the scenes worked long and hard on this celebration. It's a big thing, and should be heralded loud and clear whenever and wherever.
Because Dr. Carlyle Corbin said, on the other islands their freedom celebration day is a major event; he wondered out loud why it isn't as big here.
Any ideas why not?

Wow, I just read in the Daily News that the Emancipation Walk from Christiansted to Frederiksted is done to "mirror the path the slaves walked...in 1848 when they went to Frederiksted to demand their freedom..." What? They marched from Christiansted to Frederiksted? Since when? That's not the way I learned it.
The march for emancipation started at Butler's Bay and ended at Fort Frederik. Von Scholten was in Christiansted and had to hustle to the West. The rest, as they say, is history.
Maybe the walk from fort to fort is one of historic significance and solidarity, which is fine (and good exercise). But it shouldn't be represented as what happened in 1848. Nuttin' so go so mehson.

Unless, of course, I have been horribly misinformed all these years. Coulda happened. I doubt it but you never know.

1733 Slave rebellion on St. John, when the 8th flag briefly flew over the island
1848 Emancipation Frederiksted (I grew up in Butler's Bay, where it all started)
1878 Fireburn St. Croix
1892 Coal Loader's strike St. Thomas
What else?

I once went up to the top of Fortsburg STJ. It's one of the scariest place I've ever been. The power spirits are as strong now as they were in 1733. It is one of the most powerful sites, in my opinion, I have ever beem. A great fear came over me as I explored the ruins. I knew I wasn't supposed to be there. I didn't stay. It's an incredible place. I hope one day it is recognized, saved, reconstructed and celebrated for what it is and what happened up there.

See you in Frederiksted tomorrow.

It would be good to see the governor attend the events, not for political capital, but in recognition of the significance of our emancipation.

Whether this is the "Marcus" on the radio or not, I find his/her comments offensive. Ms. Moorehead is an esteemed Virgin Islands culture bearer whose dedication and hard work has resulted in one of the best cultural events in the V. I.
CIF, please enforce your sensorship of profanity on the "Marcus" message(6-23-09; 5:52 a.m.).
