Indigenious Virgin Islander you can’t be from here. I was brought up in a Crucian family that are proud people who has taught me so much about my culture and has shown me how to embrace every beautiful part of what it means to be from here. I am in love with my people, my culture and the family that has taught me how to appreciate what this island’s people and it’s history has done to make us better people. You may choose to embrace all the negative stuff, but I am grateful to have people in my life that instill that CRUCIAN PRIDE in me. This is my own paradise and where there is paradise my GOD lives there. So you can not destroy what has been implanted in my heart for the past 48 years. My home is and will always be St. Croix and it’s wounderful Crucian people. If you are truely who you said you are, your priorty is to always maintain the integrity of your homeland. Don’t be like the rest and bash your people as to be part of the crowd. When it comes to St. Croix I will always defend my home.

In the Wikipeda On-line Ensyclopedia gives the meaning of Crucian. It’s says A Crucian is a person from St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. Their is also a fresh water fish that is a Crucian Carp. So the word does exist Cru+ cian = people & place. Just like people who comes from St. Thomas are called St. Thomian and people from St. John are called St. Johnian. It a mixture of the Creole and European language translated to English.

Look, you cannot refute the meaning of the Spanish words SANTA CRUZ. They directly mean HOLY CROSS and nothing else, believe it or not! All words that emanate from another word use the original word as their “root”.
Therefore, if the root word is a Spanish word, it can ONLY be spelled CRUZAN. In Spanish, it is CRUZANO. If you were to use the English word CROSS, as in HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH (yes, they got it right along with the rum man dem), the English word would be CROSSIAN – it can’t be anything else…
The purported English spelling “C-R-U-C-I-A-N” is a bastardization of the Spanish root word CRUZ. It’s wrong, wrong, wrong!

Stop being fixated on the way it’s spelled as you said words are created therefore this the name that’s unique to us and we like it too bad if it bothers you. It’s like a parent that prefer to spell Mike vs Myke or Mark vs Marc.

I am a proud Crucian and a proud African-American. My lineage can be traced to Emperor Haile Selassie. As a U.S. citizen, it is my right to exercise the 1st Amendment. It is my belief that there are good people in every society. Unfortunately, there are a few evil Crucians living on St. Croix. Recall the greedy rascal who raided the V.I.treasury by giving himself a raise? Recall how his very own uncle exposed him as an elderly abuser who charged his grandmother a fee to celebrate her birthday?
What I like best about St. Croix is the diversity of the culture and ethnicity that are present here. I do embrace all the people living here regardless of their race, color, culture or creed. I especially appreciate my Crucian culture. However, we must all accept the fact that cultures do not remain unchanged. St. Patrick Day Parade is not an aspect of Crucian culture yet it is as popular as the Crucian Festival.McDonald’s sells more Big Mac than Fungi& Boiled Fish during festival time.Spanish is now more spoken here than the Crucian dialect. Quelbe is the official music but it is not heard often. The V.I.Constitution cannot preserve “our”culture;we’re the ones who must ensure our traditions are passed down to the next generation.
Take a look and see who are the people who own and operate groceries and gas stations. If you say the Arabs, you are correct. While some Crucians bitch and moan that they do not own land & businesses, others from elsewhere are capitalizing on the fact that many Crucians are lazy and are always begging the government for something. Recall ACRA and how Shelly Moorehead stated he would starve until the governor gives him money to go to Denmark? What is the pride in begging rather than earning. Do the Caucasian, Arabs and Santos beg our government for money.Let’s stop blaming others for our miseries and take responsibility for our problems. Be part of the solution and not part of the problem.Do not fear change; get out of the time warp. We’re in a new era and it is up to us to pursue the American dream. Who is stopping any Crucian from doing so?

You can’t condider yourself a Crucian not the way you speak. I really believe deep in my heart your not from here. I can appreciate my Crucian heritage even more because I have been involved with geneology group and a recent subscriber to ancestry.com and I am proud to do my research and have traced my family all the way to Africa.But the most rewarding part is to be in connection with my huge family here on St. Croix and to attend family reunion activities and to know a great family heritage I came from. I was born in Christiansted, but my father is from Frederiksted and raised in Christiansted. My family from westend is the most dynamic and fasinating group of people. They have showed me how to preserve my Crucian Heritage. Their are family members who haven’t done so well and have been incarcerated, but we have not written them off the family tree and turn our backs. We are trying to influence them by showing them how wonderful is our Crucian culture and heritage. And how to hold ourselves to our family traditions and not the traditions of this world. I don’t think you have the idea about Crucian pride. Culturally we are sound and we are moving forward to having our children realized the true Crucian Heritage and rich and beautiful traditions we hold dear and precious to our hearts. You can continue to bash Crucian people, but this is one Crucian that is not intimidated by your insults or degrading attitude. St. Croix like many places around the world have it’s problems, but for the most part we are good people and do our part in society to make it better. You can continue to tear down your country, but for me it’s always going to be positive. When we speak negative we put a curse on our land and it’s people and you wonder why things can’t get better.

So, as I mentioned previously, this preoccupation with defining who Cruzans are or are not is really driving a wedge between a community that should be focusing less on who “belongs” here and more on how we, together, can achieve common goals in life.

What is Crucian pride? Does it pay the bills? Heard the governor’s speech? The prized “Cruzan” rum industry is what’s going to help bail us out of our economic woes. Recall “Together we can”? The country that I pledge my allegiance to is called America and my president is Barack Obama. The Virgin Islands is not part of America since it is an unincorporated territory. However, we are U.S. citizens. I do not need to prove that I was born on St. Croix or that I am a loyal Crucian. Those who know me could testify to the fact that I am a proud Crucian.
It’s rather interesting when Gov De Jongh talked about possible layoffs in various government agencies because of the economic crisis and cash flow problems that the government faces, but on the other hand he failed to mention the one obvious mechanism that he could immediately put in place to begin to save this government thousands of dollars…ROLL BACK THE PAY RAISES that was pass through Act 6905, that will begin to show some fiscal responsibility on the behalf of the executive branch, its call leading by example which starts from the top.
Heard the Senate President recently? Do you really believe that the 28th Legislature is going to repeal Act 6905?
What is a Crucian Pride? Well if you don’t know your not from here. Crucian Pride has nothing to do with a product (Cruzan Rum). If you want to be sarcastic then play around with this issue. I know I hold to the values and traditions past on to me by my family. “I AM PROUD TO BE A C R U C I A N” For me coming from a profound religious upbringing I turn to scriptures when face with issues like this for strenght and guidiance. Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood. but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickness in high places. So when you try to disrupt what traditions hold for people you are out to destroy the good of mankind. YES! I am glad to hear a senator brave enough to say they are going to repeal Act 6905. The governor should be ashame of himself for suggesting lay-offs before taking a cut in his salary and his cabinet and all of those political appointies who are holding high paying jobs and sitting behind a desk doing nothing.

What is Crucian pride depends on who is answering the question. This is not a brain teaser;just would like to hear others’ opinion. Of course, Crucian pride has different meaning based on personal experience.Crucian pride to me means actively participating in our community to make it a better place and respecting the residents and laws of our land. Properly discarding garbage, manicuring the lawn & roadsides,beautifying the roads by planting trees and shrubs,removing abandoned vehicles and other eyesores, repairing dilapidated building,placing proper street signs that welcome visitors and give clear directions, being hospitable to tourists and performing act of kindness for strangers are some examples of how it is demonstrated. Saying you have Crucian pride is mere lip service. If one truly has Crucian pride it does not go unnoticed. Action speaks louder than words.
The governor is no Obama. He cannot hold a candle next to our beloved president. The governor’s flame has long been extinguished.When he raised the salary of the Commissioner of Education before she was even hired showed he was no maverick. Its the same stupid argument that more money results in better performance. The cycle continues. The governor’s salary is about the 3rd or 4th highest governor’s salary in the nation.The commissioner gets paid to be silent. There is no accountability in this administration.The speech about the state of the territory is a sham. The territory is in a state of shamble. It has not improve since this governor began his term. He is simply another crooked , greedy politician who is more interested in big salary rather than public service.Yes, I was one of the stupid, gullible voters who believed”Together we can”. The entire job is not being done yet all the commissioners are getting a big salary. Some teachers probably have decided to perform poorly due to their low salaries. What do you expect? If the governor reasons that big salary equals great performance, than low salary should equate to low performance. If the governor is smart, he would voluntarily cut his salary. His growing belly should be an indication, however, that he is literally stuffing himself with free food and getting richer with perks.He must sense that he will not be reelected, therefore, he is going to enjoy the free ride for another year. The Senate President is a clever politician. If he is successful in getting Act 6905 repealed, he’ll be elected to serve as governor in 2010. He already has my vote!
