The Drug Problem, It’s A Recurring Topic

March 27, 2008

We blame the pushers, the rappers, and the media. The pushers sell them, the rappers glorify them, and the media inundates us with stories of the lives they’ve destroyed.

We clamor for more law enforcement, more government intervention, more community involvement and help from the educational system.

But what’s the answer?

More policemen on the street would certainly be a deterrent.

Perhaps, rather than dissolving the admittedly ineffective Drug Enforcement Unit, the Governor could have demanded that that agency be staffed with people who could do the job they were hired to do.

A watchful community is certainly part of the answer and education is a key element in the prevention of drug abuse.
But the most powerful deterrent is staring us right in the face.

The lessons our children learn at home are more influential in guiding their behavior than any external force could ever be. All the lectures in the world are not as powerful as the example we set.

Talk to your kids and let them know they can talk to you. Don’t mince words – they know what’s happening out there and it’s important that they know that you do too. Start early – it’s never too soon to lay the foundation. And don’t be deceived – your child is just as vulnerable to the pressures of a society that can glamorize this most dangerous of lifestyles.

This Saturday, the U.M.B. Soldiers are sponsoring their first annual march against drug abuse. What better way to demonstrate your commitment to keeping your children and our islands drug-free than to participate. The march begins at Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant in Sunny Isles and ends at the Island Center for the performing Arts with a rally. Take the time to participate, and take some visible steps to help stamp out this most dangerous threat to our children and the quality of their lives.

so why march at sunny isles, why not march in front of all the crack houses to make it at least somewhat effective, you could start in glynn and mon bijou and then head to new works and grove and maybe end it in campo rico.

Lifetime Crucian living abroad here. On my visit home this past January, not only was I broadsided by the overwhelming malaise of the youth; but the apparent corruption of the political apparatus. It is too easy to blame rap, dealers and the media, but as far I know, they weren’t the only ones responsible for the significant amount of drugs I saw on St. Croix. Perhaps–just perhaps–a march should take place on the EAST SIDE of the island–if ah yo geh wah I sayin(wink wink). It’s too easy to simply blame locals, while giving “continentals” a free pass. From what I heard, VI poli-trickians often look the other way, when it is apparently “snowing” on the island’s east end.

    Nice article, tho.

    legalize drugs

take the money out of drugs and the crime and violence goes away

deal with it as a social issue, not a police issue

the last time the US had kids shooting each other with machine guns what during prohibition about 75 years ago. It did’t work then and it doesn’t work now.

The VI should look to the states and the research. marijuana should be decriminalized so the authorities can spend their time on the real drug problems.
Medical MJ is becoming an important treatment in many afflicitions.
Ther are several decriminalization laws that have been written so the VI could find one that would work for us.

    Hey everyone
I’m looking to whiten my teeth but not sure which whitening kit is the best and was wondering if anyone had any advice.

I tried the crest whitestrips and they didn’t keep my teeth white.. they started turning yellow after a week or two.

Sorry if its a bit off-topic but I really need some advice as I am attending my high school reunion next week and don’t want yellow teeth :)

    Thanks!
