It was all smiles and handshakes last September in Washington, D.C. when Representative Donna Christensen and her friends met with their candidate, Hillary Clinton. With much pomp and circumstance, they enjoyed their “photo-op” following Clinton’s appearance at the Congressional Black Caucus gathering and shortly thereafter, the Representative declared her support for Clinton.
In subsequent interviews and radio appearances, the Representative extolled the virtues of Clinton, calling her the most electable candidate. They rejected the notion of jumping on the Barack Obama bandwagon, and cautioned Virgin Islanders against supporting this historical, viable candidate simply because he is black – and asserted that he simply was not ready for the office of the President. Yes, the question is asked, what can be done about the domestic terrorism to which the residents of the US Virgin Islands are subjected to, daily? When it is not homicides, it is robbery, rape and discharging of firearms any hour of the night and sometime in the day. What should we as residents, taxpayers, be doing to relieve our community of the threats posed by the criminal elements? What have other communities done to address the threats by the criminal elements which terrorizes the community? Read the rest of this entry »

Once a year, we celebrate Black History Month. For 29 days in February, we recall the contributions our people have made to world history. For those of us in the Virgin Islands, the names we recall are all too familiar – David Hamilton Jackson, Buddhoe, Queen Mary – and countless others who have solidified their place in our history. We wouldn’t be where we are without them – and we revere them. Read the rest of this entry »

Anyone who is conscious of their surroundings, who is a casual observant, can see the lack of law enforcement in our community. The agencies and persons charged with the enforcement of our laws and regulations are blatantly derelict. Does the current administration consider law and order in our community of any importance, of any priority? Daily we see people violating laws, all kinds and categories of laws. Is there anyone who is not cynical about the prospects of political reform to correct the many anomalies present in the current elections code? To those who have not allowed themselves to be overcome by the prevailing cynicism that has paralyzed quite a few of the progressive elements in our community, I would invite you to consider some reforms to our election system that I believe would improve the quality of our democracy.
