Humble Servants?

October 15, 2007

On December 28, 2006, we were ‘graced’ by Senator Roosevelt David opening the special session of the 26th Legislature in a word of prayer. He prayed that we would recognize the Legislature is “divine” and “should be respected”. Less than 2 hours later, this senator illustrated why he and many of his fellow “humble servants” aren’t respected. They have a lack of respect for themselves and the people who put them in office and pay their salary.

Our humble servants told us how concerned they are about the critical condition of the GERS. They also boasted of “record revenues” for the Virgin Islands. Unfortunately, this group of senators failed to allocate $100 million of this “record revenues” to the growing GERS unfunded liability. They chose to increase our obligations despite the abundance of existing obligations we face.

Our “humble servants” attempted to justify the governor’s raise by comparing it to that of his commissioners. Have they forgotten that Governor Turnbull gave his commissioners those raises just a few years ago? Were those raises justified back then? Are they justified now? What these senators have told us, by their vote, is that education, public safety and our general quality of life are great. The day these senators step out of their “divine” world and truly live the life of “humble servants” is the day our respect will be earned.
